Monument to the Unknown Soldier

4.3/5
70 reviews
The Monument to the Unknown Soldier, located in front of the Greek Parliament Building, was erected to commemorate the unsung Greek heroes who died in the war of independence from Turkey for 400 years, as well as the soldiers who died or disappeared in the wars after 1821, as a consolation to these unsung heroes of the undead. The main body of the monument is a relief sculpture of an unknown soldier, vaguely showing the figure of an ancient Greek warrior wearing a helmet lying on a slate. Both sides of the relief are engraved with two famous words of Pericles, a famous Greek statesman in the 5th century BC, in a eulogy: "This is the tomb of the world's outstanding warriors" and "the coffin of the unknown soldier". In front of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier is the place where the Greek military parade is held, and many major state events are held here. Visiting foreign heads of state and government generally lay wreaths at the monument to the Unknown Soldier. For four hundred years, countless warriors sacrificed their lives to gain independence from the Turks. Today, there are always guards in national costumes guarding the left and right sides of the Monument to the Unknown Soldier. Every hour on the hour, the two guards will take an elegant step in a neat rhythm, and change the guard once, which is also one of the highlights of the visit to the Monument to the Unknown Soldier.Athens · 1.1 km from downtown

Construction began in 1842 and is the cathedral of Athens and all of Greece. At that time, it only took 20 years to build. Now look at this church. The architectural style follows the "Greco-Byzantine", which well reflects the perfect integration of the traditional Byzantine style of the church and European classical elements, which is very beautiful. .Athens · 928m from downtown

This is a must-see event of the change of guards every morning at 8 am. This is really a spectacular galore of the past & that is most exciting to foreign visitors. It's normally packed with bus loads of tourists and foreigners alike, so be ready for crowds, all trying to capture the best photo and video angle of the 'guards' change. The guards in full ancient military costumes are really mesmerising!

Located on the south side of the gate of the Acropolis, it was built in 161 AD by the Greek philosopher Tiberius Claudius Atticus Herodes in the Roman Emperor era in memory of his wife. It is the oldest theater in the world and one of the most outstanding buildings of the same period. Moreover, until now, this ancient theater is still in use after being well repaired. The main performance venue of the annual Athens Art Festival is here, which is also an eye-opener for the audience who come to watch the performance. The theater is a three-story building with 32 rows of seats that can accommodate up to 6,000 spectators. It is a typical semi-circular open-air theater. The performance on the stage can be clearly seen from any point in the theater. The background of the stage is a Roman window-shaped high wall, and the niches are decorated with statues. The design is very delicate, especially at night, it looks particularly artistic, with that kind of historical heavy feeling.

The Parliament Building is located in the center of Athens. The entrance is the Constitution Square and the subway transfer hub is on the left. In terms of design, there are steps from the Constitution Square to the Parliament Building, which makes the building look more majestic. Although the building itself does not feel very beautiful, including some commemorative statues, it still reflects its important position as the center of power.
