The Ihlara Valley (formerly known as Peristrema) is 120 kilometers northwest of Goreme. It is not a famous tourist attraction. Its grandeur and shock cannot be compared with the Great Rift Valley of East Africa and the Grand Canyon of Colorado in the United States, but it has its own unique features. The canyon was one of the favorite hermitages for monks in the Byzantine period, leaving behind many painted cave churches. After entering the canyon through 360 steep steps, you can walk along the Melendiz Suyu stream. If you go there in midsummer, the valley is lush with vegetation and birds are singing. There are many churches to visit along the way, and there is no sense of rush in hiking.
