The Cabañas Workhouse was built in the early 19th century to take care of people in need, such as orphans, the elderly, the disabled and the chronically ill. The almshouse is world-renowned for the harmony of its interior and exterior spaces, its minimalist design and its scale. There are many exquisite frescoes in the chapel of the almshouse, all created by the Mexican muralist Jose Clementi Orozco. Today, the Cabañas Cultural Institute is also located within the premises of the Cabañas almshouse.Guadalajara · 44.3 km from Chapala

Plaza de la Pazis located in the center of the old town of Guanajuato, Mexico. Formerly known as the Main Square, this triangular plaza slopes gently with the terrain as the entire city is built into the hills, naturally possessing a unique, staggered charm. During the colonial era, the seats of church and administrative institutions were arranged around it, and the mansions of wealthy merchants who made their fortunes in silver mining also gathered in the surrounding area. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato faces the plaza directly, and together with old buildings such as the Municipal Palace, the Legislative Palace, and the Pérez Gálvez Mansion, they enclose what was once the heart of this mountain city. The Peace Monument in the center of the plaza is the focal point, built at the end of the 19th century to commemorate the end of the Mexican War of Independence and officially unveiled in the early 20th century. The bronze statue of the Goddess of Peace stands on a green stone and marble pedestal. Created by Mexican sculptor Contreras, it is now one of the most recognizable landmarks in this ancient city.Mexico · Guanajuato City

Monumento Al Pipilastands atop San Miguel Hill on the edge of Guanajuato, Mexico. It is a classic spot for overlooking the entire city and a highly recognizable landmark of this colorful mountain town. The monument commemorates the miner hero of the War of Independence, Juan José de los Reyes Martínez Amaro, nicknamed "El Pípila." At the beginning of the War of Independence in 1810, the insurgent army led by Hidalgo was unable to capture the Alhóndiga de Granaditas granary held by Spanish forces. This miner strapped a flat stone slab to his back as a shield, rushed to the granary door with tar and a torch, and set it on fire, opening a breach for the insurgent army. Today, the approx. 20m-tall pink stone statue recreates this very scene: he charges forward with the stone slab on his back, holding high a torch known as the "Torch of Freedom." The base is inscribed with a thought-provoking quote: "There are still other granaries to be burned." Standing on the viewing platform in front of the monument, you can take in the layered, colorful houses, church domes, and winding streets of Guanajuato. It is a classic spot for photographing the city's panorama. The statue's interior features stairs, allowing you to climb to a viewing level near the shoulders and look out over the entire valley from a higher vantage point. At sunset, the rich layers of light and shadow make it very popular with tourists. After dark, the monument lights up, and its silhouette can be recognized from anywhere below the mountain.Mexico · Guanajuato City

The Alley of The Kiss

The Alley of The Kissis a famous narrow, stepped alley in the old town of Guanajuato, Mexico, known in Spanish as Callejón del Beso. The old houses on both sides of the alley are almost touching, and the two balconies upstairs are so close that one can reach out and touch them. The alley's name is linked to a local, well-known tragic love story, often referred to as the Mexican version of "Romeo and Juliet". Legend has it that a wealthy young lady named Ana fell in love with a young miner named Carlos. Forbidden by her strict father from leaving the house, Carlos spent all his savings to rent a small room opposite Ana's window, where they would whisper to each other from their balconies across the narrow alley every night. Their secret meetings were eventually discovered, and in a fit of rage, her father stabbed his daughter with a dagger. Ana fell on the third step, her blood staining the stone stairs, and Carlos soon followed her in death. Today, the mark of that tragedy remains in the alley, and local residents still allow tourists to go up to the original balconies to take photos, with the railings covered in love locks inscribed with names and wishes. At the entrance of the alley, guides vividly recount this legend.Mexico · Guanajuato City

The Cabañas Almshouse was originally built to care for and shelter those who have difficulties in life, such as some lonely elderly people or disabled people. Later, as more and more people were helped, the scale was constantly expanding. Because the design of the entire almshouse is very distinctive, it not only has exquisite sculptures, but also gorgeous murals. It is itself an architectural work of art, so it is worth visiting.

This monument can be completely ignored. It is neither understandable nor beautiful. However, it is a good viewing platform where you can see the entire colorful city buildings. Although there are no high-rise buildings, it is still nice.

This is actually a small alley. At its narrowest point, only one person can pass through. I guess the name means that if two people meet each other, they will bump into each other, so it was named this way.
