Royal Ontario Museum

9.3
4.6/5
464 reviews
The Royal Ontario Museum is located in downtown Toronto, adjacent to Queen's Park and the University of Toronto. Planned in 1912 and officially opened in 1914, it is a comprehensive museum integrating art, world culture, and natural history, with a collection totaling in the tens of millions, making it one of the largest in North America. The museum building itself is an attraction: the century-old classical facade features exquisite stone carvings, while the "Crystal" new wing, completed in 2007 and designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, consists of several tilted and interlocking metal-glass crystals wedged directly into the old structure. This clash of old and new styles has made it a city landmark in Toronto, with the crystal facade and front steps being popular photo spots. Floor distribution: For Chinese visitors, the Asian art section on the first floor deserves ample time: the entrance to the China gallery displays an entire relocated tomb complex of Ming dynasty general Zu Dashou from Beijing, complete with stone statues, tomb gates, and burial mounds—a rare sight in overseas museums. The Bishop White Chinese temple art hall features the massive Yuan dynasty mural "The paradise of Maitreya" alongside Buddhist statues and porcelain from various dynasties, presenting a comprehensive thread of Chinese art. The adjacent Japanese and Korean galleries are worth a quick visit. On the second floor, the dinosaur hall showcases the nearly 24 m-long skeleton of "Gordo" the Barosaurus spanning the room—one of the museum's highlights—while nearby mammal and bird specimen exhibits, the biodiversity gallery, and bat cave are popular with children. The third floor's ancient Egypt exhibit displays sarcophagi and mummies, while the Greek, Roman, and European galleries gather sculptures, glassware, and other artworks. The top floor hosts rotating special exhibitions—check the current schedule before visiting. The museum also features mineral and gemstone displays, meteorite exhibits, hands-on exploration areas for children, and theaters.Canada · Toronto

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park

4.5/5

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park is nestled in the temperate rainforest of North Vancouver. Its centerpiece is a pedestrian suspension bridge spanning the Capilano River canyon. The bridge, approximately 137 meters long and suspended about 70 meters above the river, was originally built in 1889 by Scottish civil engineer George Grant MacKay using hemp rope and cedar planks. After several reinforcements and renovations, it is now supported by steel cables. Stepping onto the bridge, you'll find yourself amidst the rushing river and lush canyon vegetation. The bridge sways gently in the wind, offering panoramic views of the valley and towering ancient trees on both banks. In addition to the bridge itself, the park offers two unique experiences. The Treetop Adventure consists of several smaller suspension bridges connected together, suspended tens of meters above the ground among the treetops, allowing visitors to traverse the upper rainforest from a squirrel's perspective. The cliffside walkway extends outwards along the granite cliff face, clinging to the rock face with a cantilever structure. Some sections feature a perforated lattice floor, with a deep canyon below, creating a thrilling experience. The park also features Kia'palano, an indigenous cultural exhibition area with totem poles created by First Nations sculptors. Explanatory panels and guided buided commentary introduce the deep connection between the local indigenous people and the land. The suspension bridge, treetop adventure, and cliffside walkway are all connected on foot, and the entire tour takes approximately two to three hours.Canada · North Vancouver

Casa Loma

Casa Loma Castle was built in 1911 as the private mansion of the famous financier Sir Henry Pellatt. This medieval-style castle cost $3.5 million and took 3 years to build. It consists of ornately decorated suites, 800-foot tunnels, ancient Towers, stables and 5 acres of gardens. Floor distribution: The first floor of the castle is the hall, the second floor is the bedroom and suite, the third floor is the Queen's Rifle Museum, in addition to the underground wine cellar, outdoor garden and high tower. The hall ceiling on the first floor is beautiful plaster and intricately carved, inspired by Elizabethan palaces. The garden greenhouse is a more beautiful place, the floor is Italian marble, and the magnificent stained glass dome is very beautiful. The bookcases in the library hall are high to the ceiling, and the decoration of the banquet hall is also very gorgeous. The second floor is dominated by living rooms, suites and guest rooms. Among them, the Chinese-style suites are furnished with many Chinese lacquered wood furniture and porcelain, and the walls are also decorated with Chinese patterns. On the ceiling of the master bedroom, the delicate blueberry carving is crumbling and very realistic, and the tiger skin rug shows the identity and status of the owner. On the third floor, various guns, weapons and materials are currently on display. The cellar in the basement is now a replica, the corridors are lined with movie posters filmed here, and the audio guide and souvenir shop are also located on this floor. An underground tunnel leads to the stables, garage and greenhouse. Along the narrow spiral staircase, you can climb to the upper floors of the ancient tower, and you can enjoy the city view of Toronto through the small window. Standing here, you can still hear the howling wind.Canada · Toronto

Art Gallery of Ontario

The Art Gallery of Ontario is located in downtown Toronto. Founded in 1900 by a group of private art enthusiasts, it houses over 100,000 works spanning from the 1st century AD to contemporary times, making it one of the large-scale art museums in North America. The gallery building itself is architecturally striking, and visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Toronto from the top floor. The art gallery reopened in 2008 after renovation and expansion led by Toronto-born architect Frank Gehry: the street-facing facade is wrapped in a glass and wooden corridor, resembling a glass ship drifting into the city, with lights shining through the curtain wall at night, making it particularly striking; the wooden spiral staircase in the atrium and the cantilevered titanium spiral staircase outside the tower were also designed by Gehry. At the street corner near the main entrance stands the bronze sculpture "Couch monster" by Canadian Indigenous artist Brian Jungen, while British sculptor Henry Moore's renowned bronze work "Large two forms" was relocated to the lawn of Grange Park on the south side of the art gallery. Floor distribution: The art museum has five floors. Upon entering the lobby, you can see the spiral staircase, a design that fully showcases Frank Gehry's talent. The collection is centered on two main themes: European art and Canadian art. The first-floor galleries display European paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages to the early twentieth century, featuring works by artists such as Rembrandt, Hals, and Monet. The masterpiece "Massacre of the Innocents" by Rubens, donated by collector Ken Thomson, is considered the museum's signature piece. The Gothic boxwood miniatures he left behind depict intricate scenes within a tiny space, and the lower level also displays over a hundred of his ship models, ranging from merchant ships and warships of the age of sail to modern vessels, spanning several centuries with exquisite craftsmanship, making them worth slowing down to admire. The second floor showcases Canadian art in a concentrated display, featuring Tom Thomson's masterpiece "The West Wind," the Group of Seven's landscape paintings, and Inuit sculptures and prints, offering a comprehensive view of Canada's visual art heritage. Hundreds of works donated by Moore during his lifetime are housed here, with the dedicated Henry Moore Sculpture Centre providing a serene space to appreciate his forms. The upper levels of the south tower focus on modern and contemporary art, including works by Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and Yayoi Kusama's "Infinity Mirror Room."Canada · Toronto

Banff National Park

Banff National Park, established in 1885, is a core component of the "Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks" World Heritage Site. Located in the central part of the Alberta Rocky Mountains, the park features a landscape of valleys, mountains, glaciers, rivers, forests, and meadows. Emerald-green glacial lakes, like jewels nestled among deep green coniferous forests, are considered the soul of the Rocky Mountains. One of the park's iconic sights is Lake Louise, its waters a unique turquoise green due to glacial minerals. Backed by the Victoria Glacier, lakeside hiking trails lead to mountain tea houses and higher viewpoints. Moraine Lake, with the Ten Peaks as a backdrop, reflects the spire-like peaks in its waters and was featured on the old Canadian twenty-dollar bill. Bow Valley Parkway is a classic scenic drive within the park, often frequented by bighorn sheep, red deer, and other wildlife; a leisurely drive is especially enjoyable in autumn. The Icefields Parkway extends north from near Lake Louise, connecting Peyto Lake, Bow Lake, and other glacial lakes, offering panoramic views of numerous glaciers in the valley. Banff town, located in the heart of the park, is the main visitors community, offering panoramic views of Sulphur Mountain. The Sulphur Mountain cable car takes you to the summit viewpoint, where on a clear day you can overlook the Bow Valley and the distant mountain silhouette. The park also features natural hot springs, a popular choice for visitors after outdoor activity . In winter, visitors can enjoy activities such as alpine skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating, with the frozen lakes creating a stunning contrast against the snow-capped mountains.Canada · Improvement District No. 9

The Royal Ontario Museum's glass spire, like a crystal drill bit stuck into an old building, was rather jarring. Inside, in the Egyptian gallery, a mummy lay sprawled, its shroud torn in several places, the accompanying sign barely legible. Dinosaur skeletons reached the ceiling, and children craned their necks, babbling excitedly. In the Chinese gallery, several Buddha statues were missing arms and legs, their colors faded, which ironically added to their charm compared to those in good condition. When my legs were aching from walking around, I discovered a mineral display case in a corner; the various stones glittered under the lights, and I squatted there for a while, gazing at them. When I came out, the sun was blinding, and the steps were filled with people eating sandwiches.

Decorations were on point but the overall experience was pretty lacklustre. Nothing particularly interesting about the Capilano Suspension Bridge - it’s just a bridge and a park. Wouldn’t say it’s very value-for-money.

It's cheaper than buying tickets on-site. After purchasing tickets online, you'll receive an email with a confirmation slip, which you can print out or show to the staff at the ticket office on your phone. The boat ride isn't crowded, and they provide raincoats. It offers a close-up experience of the falls and is highly recommended!

If you go there in March, you must rent a Chinese guide on the underground floor for 5 yuan to fully understand this luxurious castle. There are number signs everywhere in the castle. Click on the numbers on the guide to listen to the explanation. Climb the stairs to the top of the two towers to see the surrounding scenery. Be sure to walk through the corridor to see the four classic cars in the garage.

Online ticketing is convenient; staff simply scan the code for entry, saving you the hassle of foreign currency cash and credit card fees. The museum is fantastic; one day isn't enough to see everything. I caught the Monet exhibition and saw over a dozen original works, as well as Rembrandt pieces, various European sculptures, and exquisite handicrafts.

Banff National Park is a breathtaking destination where turquoise lakes, towering mountains, peaceful forests, and dramatic landscapes create an unforgettable experience. The scenery feels almost unreal, especially around the crystal-clear lakes surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Scenic roads, hiking trails, waterfalls, and quiet viewpoints offer countless opportunities to enjoy nature and capture beautiful photographs. In autumn, golden larch trees and colorful foliage add an extra layer of magic to the landscape. Whether you love hiking, photography, wildlife, or simply peaceful mountain views, Banff has something special to offer. It’s truly a dream destination for anyone who wants to experience Canada’s spectacular natural beauty.
