Grand Canyon National Park

8.6

4.7/5

975 reviews

Grand Canyon National Park is located in the northwestern part of Arizona, USA. It is a massive canyon carved by the Colorado River over millions of years on the Colorado Plateau: the canyon stretches over 400 km, with a vertical drop from the rim to the bottom of nearly two km. The exposed layers of red, orange, and yellow rock on the cliffs resemble an open book of geological history, with the oldest rocks at the bottom dating back approx. 1.8 billion years. The park is divided into two main visiting areas—the South Rim and the North Rim—which face each other across the canyon but require several hrs of driving to travel between them. • Two parks in one: South rim and north rim • The red and yellow rock layers give the Grand Canyon its majestic and extraordinary appearance. The north rim is less developed with far fewer travelers than the south rim, making it more popular among backpackers and camping enthusiasts who prefer tranquility. However, it has higher elevation and is often closed due to heavy snow in winter, typically only open from mid-may to mid-october. Winter travel is mostly limited to the south rim. Additionally, the popular "west rim skywalk" in the travel market is located in the hualapai indian reservation outside the park and is not the same as this area. Be sure to check the itinerary details before booking to avoid going to the wrong place. △ Open year-round, with approx. 90% traveler capacity. It is highly recommended to visit in spring, summer and fall. △ The northern edge of the park has a smaller developed area, accommodating approx. 10% of travelers. It is seasonally open from May 15 to October 15. Compared to other areas, it is more suitable for stay and camping, making it highly popular among adventure backpackers.

Upper Antelope Canyon

8.2

4.1/5

123 reviews

Antelope canyon is a classic slot canyon, divided into two parts geographically, among which Upper Antelope Canyon is more popular with travelers and a hot spot for photography enthusiasts. To enter Upper Antelope Canyon, you must join an official group tour. The tours are divided into regular tours and photography tours. Photography tours allow you to bring professional equipment like tripods. In addition to the attraction guide, the tour will also point out suitable photo spots. From mid-to-late March to early October on sunny days, around noon, sunlight shines directly from the narrow gap above into the canyon floor. Against the backdrop of suspended dust, the light forms distinct beams. The guide will also toss fine sand to make the beams more visible. However, only photography tours departing around noon have a chance to capture these light beams. That said, the main factor affecting the light effect is the weather. Ideal conditions are clear, haze-free days with good air transparency. Even on sunny days, slight cloud cover or poor air transparency may prevent the light beams from being visible.

Antelope Canyon

8

4.6/5

658 reviews

Antelope Canyon is located within the Navajo Nation reservation in the southwestern United States and is a slot canyon formed by Navajo sandstone eroded over many years by flash floods. The captivating sight in the canyon is sunlight passing through the narrow sandstone crevices and striking the canyon floor, casting ever-changing light and shadow on the smooth rock walls; the light beams at midday have become the canyon's signature image. Antelope Canyon consists of several sections, and the most popular with visitors is Upper Antelope Canyon. The upper canyon is relatively flat and easy to walk, and is famous for its light beam views—sunlight shines straight down through gaps at the top, forming bright shafts of light between the red-orange rock walls. Lower Antelope Canyon is deeper and narrower, requiring climbing ladders and stairs fixed to the rock walls to enter and exit; the experience is more adventurous, there are relatively fewer visitors, and the spiral textures and rich color layers on the rock walls are striking. Antelope Canyon X is a more niche section; the canyon is even deeper than the upper and lower canyons, but because the walls are high and light struggles to penetrate, the light beam effect cannot be seen. Its appeal lies in a quieter atmosphere and a more relaxed pace of visiting. Visiting Antelope Canyon requires entry led by a Navajo guide, who explains the canyon's geological formation and Navajo cultural stories along the way. The experiences in the three sections differ considerably: those seeking classic light beam photos should prioritize the upper canyon, those who enjoy climbing and adventure will find the lower canyon more suitable, and those who want to avoid crowds and quietly appreciate the rock wall textures will find Canyon X a good choice.

U.S. Route 66

7

Custer County · 27.4 km from downtown

90 reviews

U.S. Route 66, also known as the Will Rogers Highway or Main Street of America, was one of the original highways in the U.S. Highway System, established in 1926. The highway stretches from Chicago to Santa Monica State Beach in Los Angeles, crossing eight states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, covering a total length of approximately 2,400 miles. With the development of the Interstate Highway System, the road was officially decommissioned in 1985, and some sections have since been designated as National Scenic Byways. The scenery along the route is a defining feature of this highway. From the farmlands of Illinois to the hills of Missouri, from the plains of Oklahoma to the red deserts of Arizona, and finally to the Pacific coast of California, the road connects a multitude of small towns, motels, neon signs, and roadside diners that retain their mid-20th-century appearance. Many sections still feature original gas stations and unique shops. U.S. Route 66 has had a profound influence on American pop culture. John Steinbeck used the road as the backdrop for the westward migration in The Grapes of Wrath, earning it the nickname "The Mother Road." The Pixar animated film Cars also uses this highway as its setting.

Horseshoe Bend

6.8

4.6/5

261 reviews

Horseshoe Bendis a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River in Arizona, part of Glen Canyon. During ancient times, the Colorado Plateau uplifted, and the old river channel was locked in place, continuously cutting downward and winding around a massive rock to form a nearly 270-degree sharp bend. It is named for its horseshoe shape and is also often called the big bend of the Colorado River. The cliff top at the viewpoint is nearly 300 m above the river surface. Standing at the edge and looking down, the orange-red sandstone cliffs converge in layers, and the river at the bottom of the valley looks like a bright green ribbon swirling along the foot of the cliff. Around noon on sunny days, sunlight can shine directly onto the bottom of the bend. The fully illuminated river water exhibits a gradient of blue and green, and the entire bend lights up, making it a great time for photography. One side of the viewing platform has a railing, while the rest of the cliff edge has no barriers.

X Antelope Canyon is located not far southeast of Page, in the Navajo Indian Reserve, in a river that dries up all year round. In this canyon you will see the X formed by millions of years of flood impact and wind carving Navajo sandstone, exploring and discovering X canyon is not the same. When the sun shines on the two deep and quiet canyons, the dancing of light and shadow will release the charm here, becoming a paradise for photographers.

The Wave

4.9

3.7/5

25 reviews

The Wave is a sandstone valley known for its wave-like rock formations. The rocks in the valley were formed by the compaction and cementation of massive Jurassic-era sand dunes over long periods. Minerals such as iron and manganese carried by water have stained the rock layers into bands of creamy white, honey yellow, rust red, and deep purple. Wind erosion and intermittent water flow have polished these stripes into layered, swirling, three-dimensional patterns, and some rock layers even bear traces of ancient dinosaurs. Walking into the valley floor, the rock walls on both sides rise and fall like frozen waves, a scene that many photography enthusiasts long to capture. Entering The Wave requires a permit. Once you have a permit, you must complete a round-trip wilderness hike of approx. 10 km. There are no official trails or signs along the entire route, so you must navigate on your own using a map, and there is no water source along the way. The climate is more comfortable in the spring and fall, and when the sun shines into the valley around noon on clear days, the layers and colors of the rock patterns are particularly distinct.
