Shanxi Museum
Shanxi Museum, located at No. 13, North Section of Binhe West Road, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, is directly under the Shanxi Provincial Cultural Heritage Bureau with a deputy department-level organizational structure. As one of China's first national first-class museums, it serves as Shanxi's center for cultural relic collection, preservation, protection, research, and exhibition.
Originally established in 1919 as the Shanxi Educational Book Museum, the institution underwent several name changes before being renamed Shanxi Provincial Museum in 1953. The current museum complex was completed in 2004 and officially opened to the public in 2005 as Shanxi Museum, covering an area of 168 mu (approximately 11.2 hectares) with a construction area of 52,000 square meters. In July 2019, its branch museum - the Shanxi Bronze Museum - was officially opened.
As of July 2025, according to the Shanxi Museum's official website, the museum houses a total of 658,253 items/sets of collections. Among these, there are 40,878 precious cultural relics/sets, including 1,650 first-class artifacts (sets). The collections primarily originate from archaeological excavations since the 1920s and accumulated acquisitions over the past century, with notable highlights in bronzeware, ceramics, stone carvings, Buddhist statues, murals, and calligraphy and paintings. The permanent exhibition at Shanxi Museum is themed "Spirit of Jin," consisting of seven historical and cultural sections: Cradle of Civilization, Traces of Xia and Shang, Hegemony of the Jin State, Melting Pot of Ethnic Groups, Legacy of Buddhist Culture, Birthplace of Chinese Opera, and Jin Merchants of the World; along with five art sections: Architectural Splendor, Jade Treasures of China, Ink and Brush Masterpieces, World of Coins, and Ceramic Art Gallery.
