Datong Museum, A Must-visit Treasure Museum
Datong Museum is a national first-class museum, housing a collection of 176,000 cultural relics (sets), including 22,000 precious relics (sets), with representative artifacts from the Northern Wei, Liao, and Jin dynasties. Established in 1958, the museum officially opened to the public in 1959 under the name Datong Cultural Relics Exhibition Hall and was renamed Datong Museum in 1963. Covering an area of 51,556 square meters, Datong Museum is a comprehensive regional museum. With over 170,000 cultural relics in its collection, the exhibitions highlight the regional characteristics of Datong's history and culture, featuring four historical displays: "The Vicissitudes of the Dai Region," "Northern Wei's Pingcheng," "Liao and Jin's Western Capital," and "Ming and Qing's Strategic Town." These exhibits comprehensively narrate Datong's grandeur as the capital of the Northern Wei dynasty, the secondary capital of the Liao and Jin dynasties, and a key town during the Ming and Qing periods, recreating the scenes of various ethnic groups living together, mutually promoting, and harmoniously coexisting, fully embodying the regional cultural characteristics of ethnic integration.
