You leave Edinburgh and head north to South Queensferry. You'll cross Queensferry Crossing and get great views of one of Scotland's great man-made landmarks, the Forth Rail Bridge. You'll then enter the Kingdom of Fife and stop in the traditional fishing village of Anstruther (known to locals as 'Ainster'), where you can check out the ancient cobbled streets and walk along the seafront to the harbour. From Anstather we continue north to the medieval town of St Andrews. St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland and according to legend his remains were washed up on the coast of Fife. St Andrews is also home to the third oldest university in the UK and a beautiful ruined castle perched on the cliffs. You have approximately two and a half hours to explore this charming town. After leaving St Andrews we will travel through the rolling countryside of central Fife to Falkland. Dominating this ancient village is Falkland Palace, once one of the main residences of the old Scottish royal family, the Stewarts/Stuarts. Beyond the palace, the village is simply one of the most beautiful in Scotland, with a collection of ancient cottages and winding narrow streets. After Frankland we return to Edinburgh, passing through Loch Leven, where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned by her Protestant church. We then cross the Firth of Forth again and return to the city centre.
