first day:As you drive north, enjoy the beautiful lake.Hear stories about tragedy in Glencoe.Departing Edinburgh, head west past Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument. Stop for a rest in the small town of Callander after passing Doune Castle. Cross the fault line into the spectacular Highlands, with views of Loch Lubnaig, Loch Earn, Glen Ogle and Glen Dochart.Hear a poignant story while taking in spectacular views in Glencoe, then continue north through the Great Glen to the mysterious and beautiful Loch Ness.The lake is 23 miles long, which gives you plenty of time to try and spot the lake monster.Then arrive in Inverness and be dropped off at your booked accommodation. You can spend the evening freely exploring the "Capital of the Highlands". the next day:Arrive in Kirkwall, the capital of OrkneyExplore the landscapes of mainland ScotlandWe set out early this morning, leaving the "Capital of the Highlands" behind, crossing the Black Isle and continuing past Dunrobin Castle.From here you drive along the coastline of the Northeast Highlands and into some of Scotland's dramatic scenery.Pass the mainland village of John o' Groats* on the northern tip of Scotland before heading to Gills Bay to catch a ferry across the Pentland Firth into the Orkney Islands.After a short drive to visit the famous Italian Chapel, continue to the Viking stronghold of Kirkwall, where you can visit Kirkwall's magnificent Viking Cathedral and enjoy its winding streets full of history.*Ferry timetables vary according to season. Therefore, access to John O'Groats may not be possible. Day 3:Visit Skara Brae, a site older than the pyramidsWatch the wild ocean collide with the red rock cliffsToday you will have the opportunity to explore the fertile green pastures of this archipelago, bordered by golden sand beaches and washed by the waters of the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.You’ll visit the 5,000-year-old village of Skara Brae, the mysterious prehistoric stone circle of Brodgar, and the Druidic standing stones of Stenness.Then head to Maeshowe, where the Vikings left behind some very large collections of Norse runic inscriptions in the 12th century.Afterwards, we returned to Kirkwall to end this memorable day. Day 4:Take a stroll through the pretty harbour town of UllapoolSee the ruins of Ardvreck Castle in the geographical locationAfter a relaxing start*, leave Orkney behind and follow the Viking Waters back to the mainland. From here you'll take the well-worn path of the Top of Scotland, passing the magnificent Ben Loyal and Ben Hope mountains, along rocky cliffs and golden sandy beaches.Then you will visit the distant The wilderness of the North West Highlands and Assynt Hills, stopping to see the 15th-century ruins of Ardvreck Castle.From here you head to Ullapool, a pretty whitewashed fishing village at the mouth of Loch Broom, where you’ll spend the next night on your tour.*Ferry timetables vary according to season. Therefore, your stay in Kirkwall in the mornings may be shorter as the ferry departs earlier. Day 5:Visit Clava Cairns, the ancient standing stones made famous by the Outlander booksLearn about one of the cruelest events in British history, the story of CullodenAfter leaving Ullapool, you will see the River Droma cascading 60 metres into the Corrieshalloch Gorge. Then admire the beautiful Loch Glascarnoch, passing through Inverness, the ‘Capital of the Highlands’.You can visit Culloden Moor, the site of the Battle of Culloden in 1746, one of the bloodiest events in our history and the only battle fought on the British mainland. Next, you'll take a short drive to the ancient standing stones of Clava Cairns, made famous by Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books.From here you'll pass through ancient Caledonian pine forests, hugging the Cairngorm Mountains. Enjoy Lunch in this beautiful setting before heading through Perthshire's Big Tree country, the Kingdom of Fife, before returning to Edinburgh.
