Day 1

Activities & Attractions: Borjomi Central Park (At your own expense) Picturesque Borjomi A road through a fantastically beautiful gorge will lead you to Borjomi: you will walk around the city center, visit a park where Emperor Nicholas II and his family rest every year, see a monument to Prometheus and a pretty waterfall, and also climb the cable car to the plateau from which they open stunning views of the surroundings. Of course, we’ll talk about the famous “mineral water”, which is mined in the valley of the same name located in the territory of the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park. I will tell you about the results of archaeological excavations that shed light on the history of local mineral water, and right from the source you can taste the world famous water. 2 hr(s)
Medieval fortress Rabat You will get acquainted with one of the most expressive and colorful monuments of Georgia, literally absorbing the energy of both cultures: the fortress was the most important transit point between the Christian and Muslim worlds. You will examine the halls of the palace, decorated in the old Georgian style, and the impressive size of the fortress itself and the richness of decoration should not leave you indifferent. I will tell you about the foundation of Rabat, its name and explain the significance of Akhaltsikhe in the history of Georgia. 2 hr(s)
Activities & Attractions: Vardzia (At your own expense) Cave Vardzia The ancient complex of Vardzia is not just carved into the rock premises. This cave fortress is a monastery built not far from Tbilisi in the 12th century. The extraordinary city has 13 levels and more than 500 rooms: churches, chapels, residential cells, pantries, baths, refectories, treasuries, libraries. The rooms go 50 meters in depth and rise to a height of eight floors, in addition, secret passages that connected the premises, the remains of the water supply and irrigation system are preserved. During the tour you will explore every corner of Vardzia and find out what purpose the rock city was built and what functions it performed throughout the history of its existence. And on the way to the ancient complex you will see a wonderful panorama of the perfectly preserved Khertvisi fortress. 3 hr(s)

We did a day trip to Rabati Castle, Vardzia and Borjomi. I would definitely recommend this trip which covers a great doze about history of Georgia! Vardzia involves climbing steep steps, so make sure to be well dressed and wear good walking shoes. Coming to our tour guide, the great King George 😉, he took great efforts in explaining the history and current affairs of Georgia. We had an absolutely amazing time! I will have to agree that without our driver David’s smooth driving skills and George’s amazing taste in music, the journey wouldn’t have been this good! 😍

Our group tour started early in the morning at 7:30 AM and our excellent guide Paata was perfectly on time. The tour itself is fantastic and Paata kept us laughing and entertained throughout the journey especially during the longer stretches between legs. The lunch arranged after the fantastic climb through Vardzia was incredible especially since the cave system was both fun and exciting to climb through. In case you can't climb a lot, I would recommend you rest below and not buy a ticket for the bus journey to the base of the caves. Paata was considerate and asked everyone if they could climb and did not take anything for granted. The highlight of this tour is Vardzia while Borjomi is very underwhelming. I would recommend that you request only a five or ten minute stop at Borjomi to taste the spring water instead of taking the cable car or park tour as those doesn't offer anything special and are expensive. Pros: Paata was a hilarious and knowledgeable guide, the Vardzia leg was beautiful and an incredible experience, food was fantastic, bus journey was comfortable. Cons: Borjomi offers nothing special and I would recommend skipping it if possible. Thank you Ushba for a great experience.

Unfortunately I was on a tour with only Russians, besides two very nice Chinese girls - obviously not the organisers’ fault, but I wish they told me and gave me alternative options. Besides 3 of them, the other Russians were all incredibly rude and unfriendly. It would have been nice if the guide grouped us English speakers together on the bus, instead I was made to sit in front of those two really rude Russian women that treated my seat as their own, one even put her bare foot on it - really disgusting. I would highly recommend going to the agency’s office few days before and check on your group so you can change the date in case. The Russians I’ve met in the UK are all lovely but, after a week in Georgia, I feel like there are two different kinds of Russians, at least in my experience. The tour itself is fantastic, you get to see very nice and interesting places. There’s no time to visit both the park and go on the cable car - I wish I chose the cable car since the park itself is quite bland; very good for hiking I guess but not great for a one-hour long visit. The caves are fascinating and the highlight of the tour - they’re exhausting though, there’s loads of up and down on narrow and irregular stairs and tunnels, and definitely require to be in very good physical shape. My legs hurt for 2 days afterwards, and I’m used to walk a lot. I totalled 58 flights of stairs at the end of the day! We had to wait for ages many times for the one slower person, which was annoying since it was boiling hot and with very little shade - definitely wear sunscreen. The restaurant we stopped at was incredibly overpriced (20GEL for a Khachapuri Adjaruli, in Tbilisi you pay 4-7GEL) and really not good, I couldn’t eat any of the food. But it’s the only option in the area - I would recommend bringing a packed lunch. Our guide was very knowledgeable and a really kind man.
