The rocky island where Chillon Castle is built faces the shimmering Lake Geneva on one side and is backed by steep and towering mountains on the other side. It was inhabited even in prehistoric times. For hundreds of years, the passage of ships on Lake Geneva and the important land route to the St. Bernard Pass were controlled by this island. Chillon Castle was owned by the Counts of Savoy from the 12th to the 16th century. Later, the residents of Bern captured and occupied this water castle, and later it was captured and occupied by the residents of Vaud.
