Reviews: From Sofia: Plovdiv and Rila Monastery tour in one day

The trip itself wasn't bad, but it took too long. Of the 11.5-hour tour, we spent 8.5-9 hours in the car. After Plovdiv, we returned to Sofia and left Sofia for Rila with another driver, when perhaps we could have changed cars halfway to Rila, without having to drive another two hours back to Sofia and leave. The drivers were friendly, the cars clean. Rila is worth seeing (we were there for 35 minutes), but Plovdiv, in my opinion, wasn't. In Plovdiv, there was a free guide (which you have to pay separately) for a guided tour of the city, which, on the one hand, isn't a bad way to get to know the city. He was good but slow, and we didn't see several things because he talked too much about things not related to the visit. All in all, it's worth doing if you're short on time and want to see more.

Reviews: Plovdiv: Guided Walking Tour

This is a very nice walking tour. We were fortunate to have excellent guides who led us through the lesser known alleys, and excellent picturesque places that made for great photographs while taking in the rich history of the place. That said, there's quite a bit of incline walking uphill and downhill, so it's worth carrying a bottle of water, and in hindsight, an umbrella if we ever visit in the winter when it's raining or snowing.
