We had a lovely time with our guide Thomas. He was on time and took us on a memorable journey to Wannsee and Potsdam. He was super knowledgeable about the area and the topics surrounding the German history. Visiting Wannsee and reading/learning about the history of what happened there was an eye opener. Potsdam was beautiful with all the castles and houses. Overall, it was a very good trip-well paced for 5 hours. One piece of advise- we barely had time for lunch-it may be better to pack your lunch and go on this trip.

Our Berlin tour with Jan (Jon) was far more than sightseeing—it was a thoughtful walk through history, culture, and memory, guided by someone who knows how to make the city speak. Jan weaved the story of Berlin through its landmarks. At the Holocaust Memorials, he explained how design forces us to feel the disorientation of persecution, while the Queer Memorial revealed histories long suppressed. At the Brandenburg Gate, he unpacked how its meaning shifted—from peace, to victory, to unity—making clear how architecture carries politics. Potsdamer Platz became a lesson in urban reinvention, contrasting Renzo Piano’s terracotta façades with Helmut Jahn’s glass Sony Center, while Jan reminded us of the fragility of modern materials with tales of falling glass panes. At the Reichstag, he pointed out Norman Foster’s glass dome as a symbol of transparency, born of controversy but now iconic. The tour never shied from contradictions: Frederick the Great’s tolerance paired with antisemitism, the Palace of the Republic erased for a reconstructed royal castle, and the scars of WWII intentionally preserved at the Neues Museum.
