Potatso National Park

4.4/5
10.1k reviews
Potatso National Park is located in Shangri-La, Yunnan, in the heart of the "Three Parallel Rivers" world natural heritage site in northwestern Yunnan. "Potatso" in Tibetan means delivering all beings to the shore of happiness. The park is mainly composed of two plateau lake areas, Bitahai and Shudu Lake, which are about ten km apart. Between them are scattered the subalpine meadows of Militang and Tibetan villages like Luorong. Here, lake wetlands, primeval forests, and plateau pastures are concentrated, with most of the mountain forests maintaining their original ecology. Tours involve eco-friendly shuttle buses connecting the areas, followed by walking along boardwalks for a closer look. Take the eco-friendly sightseeing bus at the entrance, and you will arrive at the Shudu Lake attraction in about 20 minutes. The lake water is clear and blue, with a vast plateau pasture along the shore. In spring and summer, wildflowers bloom across the grassland, creating a stunning view. On winter mornings, vapor condenses on the lake surface, forming a layer of mist—only those who take the first bus in the early morning can witness this wonder. A wooden walkway stretches along the lakeside pasture, and it takes about an hour to complete the loop. At the end of the walkway is the eco-friendly bus stop, where you can board the bus to the next destination after your visit. The next stop of the eco-friendly bus is the vast and flat Miritang grassland. Bitahai is the final stop of the eco-friendly bus route and the highlight of this trip. In Tibetan, Bitahai means "a lake surrounded by oak trees like a felt blanket." As the name suggests, the lakeshore is densely covered with oak trees resembling a green felt blanket. Among the oak trees grow numerous azaleas. Every year from May to June when spring arrives, azalea petals fall into the water. Fish that eat the slightly toxic azaleas float to the surface, creating Bitahai's famous spectacle: "azalea-intoxicated fish." A boardwalk is also built along the lakeshore of Bitahai. Walking slowly along the boardwalk leads to the lakeside dock. There are cruises on the lake for sightseeing the surrounding mountains and waters.Shangri-La · 25 km from downtown

Songzanlin Scenic Spot

7.9
4.5/5
3.9k reviews
Songzanlin Scenic Spot is located on the hillside north of Shangri-La city, consisting of Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, Lamuyangcuo Lake, Naizi River Wetland, and Niwangzong Ancient Town. Its core is Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, known as the "Little Potala Palace." Built in 1679 and also called Guihua Temple, it is an important Gelugpa monastery in the Sichuan-Yunnan region. The entire temple complex is built against the mountain, facing south, with an elliptical outer wall, resembling an ancient fortress from afar. The two main halls, Tsatsang and Jikang, stand at the highest point of the monastery as five-story Tibetan-style structures with gilded copper roofs. Surrounding them are Khamtsen and monks' quarters, clustered in layers, further accentuating the grandeur of the two main halls. The Tsatsang Hall is where monks study scriptures and delve into Buddhist teachings. The rear hall houses bronze statues of Tsongkhapa and Maitreya. The Jikang Hall enshrines a statue of Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug school, at its center, with murals of the Eight Medicine Buddhas adorning its walls. The temple also preserves precious artifacts such as a gilded Sakyamuni statue, palm-leaf manuscripts, exquisitely painted thangkas in gold and colors, golden lamps, and the "Tengyur" scriptures handwritten in gold ink—many of which are rarely displayed. Outside the living Buddha's scripture room on the third floor of the Tsatsang Hall hangs a remarkable photograph titled "Sun and moon shining together over Meili Snow Mountain," taken in the 1980s—a rare sight worth seeking out. In front of the temple lies Lake Lhamo Latso, whose name means "Holy Mother's Soul Lake" in Tibetan. Its calm waters reflect the entire temple complex, offering a classic vantage point for capturing inverted images of the monastery. The lakeside boardwalk also provides opportunities for birdwatching and wetland views, though some sections are floating bridges—watch your step while walking. The visiting route is not complicated: after entering the temple gate, you'll first climb a steep staircase of over a hundred steps. Upon reaching the square in front of the main hall, you can enjoy a distant view of Shangri-La city. At an altitude of over 3,000 meters on the plateau, there's no need to rush—taking it slow is more advisable. The morning mist and rising sun make the golden roof of the main hall particularly dazzling, making it ideal to visit the temple in the morning and circle the lake in the afternoon. From the 26th to the 29th day of the 11th month in the Tibetan calendar (often falling around the turn of the Gregorian year), the annual Gedong Festival takes place here. The temple square hosts grand masked cham dances, with Tibetan locals from surrounding villages coming to worship and sightsee, creating a lively atmosphere perfect for experiencing local religious and folk customs.Shangri-La · 3.2 km from downtown

As the real-life counterpart to the legendary Shangri-La from "Lost Horizon," this land boasts a dramatic 3,576 m vertical elevation difference, vividly illustrating the ecological marvel of "experiencing four seasons on one mountain and varied weather within ten li." Towering snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and ancient villages together compose a magnificent epic where nature and culture intertwine on this forgotten paradise, awaiting every explorer's arrival. Route to the hidden realm: One-day highlights route:Attraction entrance → Balagzong Village → Echo Wall (experience zip-lining) → Drolma Lhakhang → Balagezong Scenic Area in Shangri-La Grand Canyon (experience rafting) → Millennium Bodhi Tree → Return In-depth panoramic tour:Attraction entrance → Balagzong village (transfer to bus) → Shambhala snow mountain stupa → Echo wall → Drolma Lhakhang → Balagezong Scenic Area in Shangri-La Grand Canyon → Millennial bodhi tree → Return Note: Passengers who choose the in-depth tour can stay overnight at the attraction. The entire tour takes approx. 6–8 hrs. Attraction introduction: Bala village, elevation 2,900 m Bala village is nestled on a mountainside surrounded by eight sacred peaks, each with its own name, encircling the village like an eight-petaled lotus. The village cascades along the mountain slopes, breathing in unison with the snow-capped peaks. ⏳ Recommended length of visit approx. 40 mins Shambhala stupa snow mountain, elevation 4250 m The Shambhala stupa snow mountain, known as "Jiangqiu Qudeng" in Tibetan ("Qudeng" meaning stupa), is located northeast of the Gezong snow mountain. Named for its striking resemblance to a white stupa, it is a unique Tibetan sacred site recorded in the Tibetan Buddhist canon and the celestial stupa prophesied by Buddha Shakyamuni after his enlightenment. Beneath the stupa, a set of Buddha's footprints remains to this day. The naturally formed pyramidal peak, cloaked in snow, stands majestically under the sky. Flanking it are two mountains—one resembling a seated lama chanting scriptures and the other an unfolded sutra—collectively symbolizing the "Three Jewels" of Buddhism (Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha). This sacred triad draws countless devout pilgrims to pay homage and make wishes. ⏳ Recommended length of visit approx. 1 hr Echo wall at an altitude of 3000 m Descending from the sacred snow realm, you are greeted by a canyon masterpiece with a 700 m vertical drop. The suspended wooden walkway winds around the cliffs like a ribbon, where a single shout can awaken the mountains' chorus. At the end, a fully transparent glass viewing platform lets you step into the clouds. The return offers an optional zip line, soaring 100 m above the canyon for a brave flyer's finale. ⏳Suggested tour duration approx. 40 mins Zhuomalakang, elevation 2,900 m This Tibetan cultural museum is a harbor for the soul to rest. Solemnly displayed within are 21 Tara statues, silently watching over all who come and go. Eight white stupas bask in the warm sunlight, while ancient thangkas continue their wordless narratives. The hum of prayer wheels and the flicker of butter lamps weave together a sacred space—here, every palms-pressed prayer and whispered wish pays homage to time and brings peace to the heart. ⏳ Recommended length of visit is about 20 minute Balagezong Scenic Area2,050m above sea level Balagezong Scenic Area in Shangri-La Grand Canyon is renowned for its unique landform featuring "gorges within gorges, interconnected gorges." The valley bottom displays a typical U-shaped structure, with the Gangqu River meandering through it. Visitors can walk along the 2.5 km wooden plank trail or choose to take a boat downstream, immersing themselves in the poetic scenery of "sheer cliffs facing each other while a crystal-clear river flows through a painting-like landscape," experiencing the grandeur and majesty of the canyon. ⏳ Recommended length of visit approx. 1 hr Millennium bodhi tree 2,050m above sea level In Tibetan Buddhism, the bodhi tree is a sacred tree that embodies all virtues, protecting all living beings and shining through the ages. At the finale of the itinerary, a 3,000-year-old bodhi tree greets you in a breathtaking manner. Astonishingly, many years ago, a distinct "Buddha's hand" seemingly emerged overnight from its trunk, revered as a divine miracle capable of bringing joy and peace. Locals also regard it as a "wealth-grasping hand," believing that touching it can attract fortune, adding further auspicious significance to this spiritual tree. ⏳ Recommended length of visit approx. 15 mins After visiting the above attractions, you have touched upon the outline of the spirit of Balagezong. However, this is merely a glimpse of this hidden paradise. As an indispensable must-visit destination in Shangri-La, the charm of Balagezong Scenic Area goes far beyond this. If time permits, we highly recommend you embark on a deeper exploration: Classic loop: This one-day highlights tour introduced in the route is an efficient choice for first-time visitors to Balagezong Scenic Area. Hidden trail hiking: The attraction features multiple highly recommended hiking routes, guiding you deep into the secluded heartland to experience undisturbed tranquility. To this day, even hoof prints can still be seen on the stone roads, relics left by ancient horse caravans over time. Tiger Leaping Gorge is truly breathtaking! Seeing it in person truly makes you appreciate the immense power of nature. The Jinsha River roars and surges through the gorge, its waves crashing against the banks, creating a deafening roar. The spray from the water on the viewing platform is incredibly impactful. The cliffs on both sides are majestic and precipitous, with snow-capped mountains visible in the distance – the scenery is magnificent and photogenic. The scenic walkways are well-maintained, making it relatively easy to explore, even for seniors. The signs are clear, the environment is clean, and there are no hidden fees. Although the mountain paths are quite challenging, seeing this world-class canyon scenery makes it all worthwhile. I highly recommend visiting Tiger Leaping Gorge when you come to Yunnan; it's an unforgettable stop on your trip!

The weather wasn't great, but it was still incredibly beautiful, almost unrealistically so, haha. It cleansed my soul, and I didn't want to leave. I even encountered some squirrels. Along the way by bus, we saw even more beautiful undeveloped canyons, streams, and trees. I look forward to more areas being developed in the future.

The scenery is beautiful and highly recommended. The experience is great, but it takes 6-7 hours to reach the top of the mountain. It is recommended to drive into the scenic area (there is a 200 yuan environmental protection fee per vehicle), but the time is flexible. The roads in the scenic area are narrow, steep, and have very sharp bends, so experienced drivers are needed for safety.

I read in a travel guide that horseback riding is risky and you might get ripped off, so I just hiked up the mountain. The first viewing platform wasn't worth it; the pond was full of mud and weeds. Just head towards the crowds. The higher you go, the better the scenery. Even on a rainy or cloudy day, the pond water was a beautiful blue. It was definitely worth the trip and the hike (hiking at an altitude of over 2,000 meters is quite tiring).

After having a Tibetan meal in Dukezong Ancient Town, I saw some scenic views online and on a whim, my partner and I decided to drive there. It was winter, so the road conditions were quite dangerous. Because it was night, the roads were covered in black ice and snow. We didn't encounter many vehicles along the way, so it felt rather deserted, but thankfully we made it safely. We were also incredibly lucky to witness the sunrise over the sacred mountains—a sight I'd never seen before. I definitely want to see those sacred mountains again someday!

My first hike was supposed to be easy, but it took me four and a half hours to get to the village, a total elevation gain of 1700 meters. At an altitude of over 3000 meters, it gave me courage. The next day, I hiked 26km from the sacred waterfall to the village. Now I'm not afraid to climb any mountain on the plains anymore. The scenery after entering the village was unbeatable. However, with the road now open, I won't have to go through Ninong to get to the village anymore; I don't want to go through that ordeal again.
