Janiculum Hill

Janiculum Hill

4.4
The main attraction on the hill is the Church of San Pietro in Montorio. The church's gardens are charmingly decorated with grape arbors. The grounds also contain a small church by the Renaissance master Bramante, whose style is reminiscent of Florence's Cathedral. In the chapel behind, there's said to be a crucifix of San Pietro on an inverted cross. From the small square in front of the church, you can overlook the streets of Rome. The Tiber River meanders from left to right. To the right is the whitewashed Vittoriano, and to the left is the Monte Mario hill with its observatory. In the middle are several monuments. This tree-lined street leads to Piazza Garibaldi, a perfect place for a stroll. Lined on both sides of this street are busts of patriots who, like Garibaldi, died fighting for Italian unification. At the end of the street, in the square, stands an equestrian statue of Garibaldi. The view of Rome from here is superb. On Sunday afternoons, puppet shows, similar to those performed under the shade of the square's trees, are often seen by tourists with children.Italy · Rome

Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls features 80 magnificent columns and a spectacular ceiling. Beneath the baldachin of the main altar lies the tomb of Saint Paul. The mosaic above the altar is said to have been created by Venetian craftsmen. The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and Martyrs was converted from the frigidarium of the Baths of Diocletian. The church entrance is built into the ruins of the baths; while it may look modest, the interior space is truly impressive. The holy water stoups at the entrance feature angel designs, a testament to the fact that this church is quite remarkable.Italy · Rome

The devout Christian St. Cecilia was martyred in the 3rd century, and her remains were found in the catacombs in 1599. It is said that although the body has not decayed even after more than 1,000 years, it is said that the three-in-one God is represented by the finger just like when it was buried. The church was built on the site of her husband's ancient residence. The statue of St. Cecilia under the inner main altar is made by Maderno. A beautiful Byzantine mosaic at the back depicts her and her husband. Ancient dwellings and grain stores can be seen in the catacombs.Italy · Rome

Beautiful basilica in the Trastevere. It's reputedly one of the oldest churches in Rome and may even be where the first mass was said. The facade is beautiful and the mosaics a real treat.

This Basilica is dedicated to the Patroness of Music who was martyred in the 3rd century. Built in the 9th century on top of the 5th century church and crypts that are still visible and active. Cecilia, the same one Paul Simon claimed was breaking his heart by not helping him with lyrics, is celebrated here 11/22 in the older church underground.
