Tuscan Archipelago National Park
Tuscan Archipelago National Park is the largest marine park in Europe, consisting of seven unique islands, each known for its rich flora and fauna, unique geological formations, and deep historical heritage: The largest island is Elba Island. This triangular island is dotted with bays and coves, with a network of hiking trails waiting to be explored. The second-largest, Isola del Giglio, is famous for its clear waters and rich marine life, making it a favorite among diving enthusiasts. From the unification of Italy until 1998, Pianosa long housed a high-security prison, which allowed most of the area to remain in its pristine state. Today, it is only open for limited visits under the guidance of a tour guide. Capraia is the third-largest island in the archipelago and the only one of volcanic origin, formed by an underwater volcanic eruption nine million years ago. Giannutri emerges like a limestone crescent: its 11 km of rocky coastline and seabed are full of biodiversity, with dolphins and fin whales often swimming here. Gorgona is the smallest island in the archipelago and houses an agricultural penal colony.
