Vök baths

Vök baths is located on the shores of Lake Urriðavatn in Egilsstaðir, East Iceland. It is Iceland's only floating geothermal pool and opened in 2019. Two circular floating geothermal pools are built directly on the lake, allowing you to take in panoramic views of the East Fjords' mountains and the lake while soaking. The water in the pools comes from natural geothermal springs deep beneath the lake. It is the only geothermal water in Iceland certified as drinkable, making it safe to drink and exceptionally pure. The word "Vök" comes from Icelandic and refers to the ice holes that melt on the lake surface in winter due to geothermal heat, which was the original clue that led people to discover the existence of geothermal springs. The onshore area features additional hot pools, a Finnish sauna, a cold mist tunnel, and a cold plunge pool, as well as a tea bar serving local herbal teas and a restaurant specializing in local ingredients. The overall atmosphere is tranquil and natural, making it an excellent place to experience the geothermal wonders of East Iceland.

Seydisfjordur Church

Seydisfjordur Church sits on a hill in the town of Seydisfjordur in Iceland's East Fjords. Its vibrant blue exterior creates a unique color contrast against the surrounding white wooden buildings and green valley, making it the town's most recognizable landmark. Built in 1894, the church is an important Protestant place of worship, and its iconic blue image is widely known from its appearance in numerous photographs. The town itself is a hub for artists, and the area around the church preserves a collection of historic, colorful wooden buildings. Nestled between fjords and mountains, the town showcases the unique cultural landscape of Iceland's East Fjords region.

Gufu waterfall

Gufufoss (also known as Steam Waterfall) is located in eastern Iceland along the Fjarðará River and is the largest waterfall in the Seyðisfjörður fjord, with a drop of approx. 27m. The abundant water flow creates a large amount of mist as it falls, and a hazy rainbow halo can sometimes be seen in the sunlight, which is how it earned the name Steam. The surrounding valley is covered in green grass and embraced by fjords and mountains, offering tranquil scenery. It served as a filming location for the movie "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," and the magnificent water flow and canyon background are impressive on screen.

No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Vatnajökull National Park

Blue Ice Cave

The Blue Ice Cave is a natural ice cave that forms under Iceland's Vatnajökull Glacier every winter, serving as a unique and rare natural view during the Icelandic winter. The color and shape of the ice cave are ever-changing. Not only does the shape differ from year to year, but even within a single day, it can display varying shades of blue depending on the weather and light, making every cave one-of-a-kind. This mysterious blue color comes from the ice layer's special filtering and reflection of light: the denser the ice, the more thoroughly it absorbs red light, resulting in a deeper and purer blue. Sunlight refracts through the ice into the cave, illuminating the interior with a dreamlike, blue-purple view.

Vatnajökull National Park

Vatnajökull National Park is located in southeastern Iceland. Centered on the ice cap of the same name, the park covers more than one-tenth of Iceland's land area. The Vatnajökull ice cap has an average thickness of nearly 400 m. Beneath the thick ice lie several active volcanoes, including Grímsvötn and Bárðarbunga. Geothermal heat generated by volcanic activity constantly acts on the base of the glacier. Here, "ice and fire" is not just a literary metaphor, but a geological process that plays out day after day—volcanic eruptions can even trigger glacial floods, with rushing meltwater carrying ice blocks downstream. The park encompasses a rich variety of landscapes, offering diverse activities such as hiking, glacier viewing, and caving. Every winter, blue ice caves naturally form at the edge of the glacier, with the deep blue ice walls displaying dreamlike colors as light penetrates them. Vatnajökull is also a filming location for the "Beyond the Wall" scenes in Game of Thrones. Standing on the vast ice field, visitors feel as small as dust in the boundless expanse, and that raw, cold natural power truly resonates with the atmosphere of the North in the show.
