Pigeon Valley
No. 2 of Best Things to Do in Cappadocia

Pigeon Valley

7
4.8/5
190 reviews
Pigeon Valleyis located between the towns of Uçhisar and Goreme in the Cappadocia region, and is a valley named for the dovecotes that densely cover its rock walls. These holes are not natural formations but were carved by ancient inhabitants into the soft volcanic rock: they carved caves to raise pigeons, using the droppings as fertilizer for growing grapes and fruit trees, and the pigeons were also used to deliver messages, leaving behind the sight of cliff faces riddled with caves after centuries of accumulation. There is an observation deck at the valley entrance, which is the best spot to overlook the entire valley. The rock of Uçhisar Castle on the opposite side is layered with cave dwellings, a common photo angle in Cappadocia. Flocks of pigeons gather near the observation deck year-round, and vendors often sell grain that you can buy to feed them. There is also a large tree nearby decorated with traditional evil eye charms from Türkiye, which is a popular photo spot. If you want to explore further, you can follow the path from the observation deck down to the valley floor and take the hiking route that connects the two towns. Along the way, you will find Byzantine-era cave houses and passages, with ancient murals still visible on some of the cave walls. The trail is mostly sandy and rocky, with some sections having no shade.Uchisar · 3.4 km from Goreme

Rose Valley

4.7/5
98 reviews
Rose Valley is surrounded by mountains and rocks, especially in the evening when the sun sets, the afterglow of the setting sun paints the valley with a rose color, and the scenery is particularly moving. The Valley of Roses is not far from the town of Goreme and can be reached to the top by ATV or horseback. Long periods of running water, floods and frost have cracked the rocks, eroding their softer parts away, leaving behind a bizarre moon-like landform that is awe-inspiring to nature. In the town of Goreme, there are day trips that include sunset viewing in the Valley of Roses, as well as special hiking activities. The hike in Rose Valley is generally 2 hours. After reaching the top of the mountain, you will stay for about 40 minutes to watch the sunset, and then go down the mountain after sunset. If you sign up for the morning hot air balloon project, you can overlook the Rose Valley at sunrise from a high altitude, and the scenery is even more impressive.Goreme · 2 km from downtown

Devrent Vadisi

5.6
4.8/5
45 reviews
Devrent Vadisi is located northeast of Goreme in Cappadocia, in the Avanos area, and is a valley with a particularly striking erosional landscape. Unlike many of Cappadocia's valleys, there are no rock-cut churches or cave dwelling ruins here. It is entirely the work of nature: Ash from ancient volcanic eruptions deposited into soft tuff, which was then covered by a hard basalt cap layer. After years of erosion by wind and rain, cone-shaped rock pillars wearing stone hats were left behind, commonly known as "fairy chimneys." The Camel Rock at the valley entrance is its signature feature. Its kneeling posture, with the hump, long neck, and head clearly visible, is the star of many tourists' photos. The trail inside the valley is short. Taking a slow walk around and examining these rocks from different angles is the unique pleasure of this valley. The oblique sunlight in the morning and evening dyes the rock formations in ochre and pink, and various outlines are easier to identify under the long shadows.Avanos · 5.8 km from Goreme

The Three Beauties are named for their resemblance to three women wearing headscarves and are part of Cappadocia's iconic "fairy chimneys" landform. These unique rock columns not only showcase the work of nature, but also allow people to feel the magical power of time and weathering. Visitors can enjoy natural works of art that look like sculptures and experience a shock that transcends time and space. The Three Beauties are not only a paradise for photography enthusiasts, but also a good place to learn about the geological history of Cappadocia. The surrounding landscape is like the surface of the moon, which is breathtaking and seems like being on another planet. Visitors are advised to visit in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer, allowing for colorful photos that capture the beauty of the changes in the rocks under different light. Whether you are a professional photographer or an ordinary tourist, you can find inspiration and fun here.Urgup · 5.3 km from Goreme

Hope Mountain is a hill located in the center of Urgup. It is an excellent place to overlook the town's 360-degree panorama. Every sunset, some tourists gather here to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Said to be a hill, it is actually a towering rock. Due to a rockfall incident in 2007, the viewing platform is now much smaller after renovation. It is worth mentioning that there is also a quaint little teahouse on the top of the mountain, where you can order a cup of Turkish coffee brewed in the traditional hot sand method at a very cheap price.Urgup · 7.1 km from Goreme

This is one of the historic Catholic church sites in Cappadocia, located near the Church of the Dovecote and can be visited by the way. Only some broken stone pillars remain in the church, and the religious frescoes have been severely damaged and faded. From the inside of the church to the outside, it is a beautiful countryside scenery.Avanos · 2.9 km from Goreme

Mausoleum for former Turkish leader

7
4.7/5
143 reviews
Mausoleum for former Turkish leader is located on a small hill southwest of the center of Ankara. The entire complex emphasizes axis and symmetry: ascending the steps leads to the straight-stretching Road of Lions, flanked by 24 Hittite-style stone lion statues. At the end of the road is the Ceremonial Plaza, with its ground paved in carpet patterns of Türkiye, surrounded by colonnades on three sides, with towers named after ideals such as "Independence," "Freedom," "Peace," "Victory," and "Republic" distributed symmetrically. The mausoleum building at the front of the plaza is the core of the site. Inside the Hall of Honor lies a symbolic sarcophagus carved from a single block of red marble, while Atatürk's actual burial chamber is located in the crypt beneath the hall. The two sides of the mausoleum facade are inscribed with his "Address to the Youth of Türkiye" and his 10th Anniversary Speech.Türkiye · Ankara

Tuz Lake

6.7
4.9/5
81 reviews
Tuz Lake is located on the Central Anatolian Plateau in Türkiye. It is the second-largest lake in Türkiye after Lake Van and is one of the few large hypersaline lakes in the world. The lake is very shallow and has no outlet, with water levels fluctuating dramatically by season: the lake surface is expansive in winter and spring, but shrinks significantly after evaporation in the high heat of midsummer, exposing vast white salt flats where visitors can walk deep into the lakebed on hard, coarse salt crystals. The salt layer at the bottom of the lake is thick, and a significant portion of the table salt in Türkiye is produced from the salt fields in the lake area. Tuz Lake is famous for its pink lake surface in midsummer: high temperatures cause evaporation that spikes the lake's salinity, leading to the rapid proliferation of halophilic microorganisms like Dunaliella salina, which secrete red pigments that dye the entire shallow lake pink or even crimson, contrasting with the white salt crusts on the shore. This color only appears in the highly saline shallow water and quickly dilutes and fades when the water level rises, so it is not visible all year round. Around spring each year, flamingos often come to the shallow waters around the lake to rest and forage, and the sight of them framed against the pink lake surface is a unique scene here. After the water level rises in the fall, the lake returns to a layer of calm, shallow water, and on windless, sunny days, you can capture "mirror of the sky" reflections.Türkiye · Tuzyaka Mahallesi

Mevlana Museumis located in Konya, Türkiye, and is the final resting place of the 13th-century Persian Sufi poet Rumi. "Mevlana" means "our master," a title of respect given to him by the world, from which the museum takes its name. The site was originally a rose garden gifted by the Seljuk Sultan. After Rumi was buried here in 1273, a conical dome covered in turquoise tiles was built over his tomb. The dervish lodge, recitation hall, and mausoleum were gradually expanded, becoming the spiritual center for the Whirling Dervishes, and the entire complex was converted into a museum in the 1920s.Türkiye · Konya

Nara Travel NotesJuly 15, 2026

Pigeon Valley is worth visiting for both the viewpoint and the history behind the rock-cut dovecotes. The small openings in the cliffs were used for pigeons, whose droppings helped fertilise local vineyards and orchards.I visited from the Uçhisar side. The viewpoint works well as a short stop, while the full trail to Göreme is about 4.1 km. According to the official sign, the average walking time is around 3.5 hours. The path is narrow and uneven, with steep sections and some risk of falling rocks, so proper walking shoes, water and sun protection are important.A very interesting place once you know what the holes in the cliffs were actually used for.

The huge rock cliffs are very spectacular and appear rose-red, especially at sunset in the evening. Standing across the valley, you can see the entire view. There are trails in the canyon that lead to the campsite.

Amazing work of nature where the entire valley is sculpted by nature into different shapes and sizes. from the Camel, to penguins, a pair of kissing ducks, upside down bear etc. Worth a visit before the landscape changes again over the years.

On the way from Ankara to Cappadocia, we passed by Lake Tuz, and the travel agency arranged it as a tourist attraction. The bus stopped by the roadside and passed through a store and entered Lake Tuz. The store sells special souvenirs and salt from Lake Tuz, which is said to be used for cleaning. The part of Lake Tuz we entered had no water, but only salt. Since there are no buildings around, the lake and the sky are connected. It is very suitable for taking pictures, and taking pictures of people can also produce very good results. The lake feels very large, but due to the short time, we did not go too far inside, which is a pity. Because of Lake Tuz, I feel that Ankara is worthwhile.

Everything was amazing... I was impressed that the Quran from around the 4th century was well preserved and exhibited. There didn't seem to be any particular dress code, but you do need to wear shoe covers, which are distributed at the entrance before entering. There are people praying inside, so it's best to stay quiet and wear clothes that expose as little as possible.
