Bagrati Cathedral

Bagrati Cathedral stands atop Ukimerioni Hill in Kutaisi and is a prominent landmark of this ancient city, visible from many corners of the city. It was built in the early 11th century, commissioned by Bagrat III, the first king of a unified Georgia, and has long been considered a masterpiece of medieval Georgian architecture. Tall columns and layered arches support the central dome, and the exterior walls still feature reliefs of floral and animal motifs that are fascinating to examine closely. The cathedral is used by the Georgian Orthodox Church for regular religious ceremonies and is also a preferred venue for weddings among Kutaisi locals. Reaching the top of the hill offers a panoramic view with the entire city spread out below, which is especially stunning at sunset.Kutaisi · 13.9 km from Kumistavi

Colchis Fountain
No. 10 of Night Attractions in Georgia

Colchis Fountain

4.3
Colchis Fountain is located in the central square of Kutaisi, Georgia, and is one of the city's most iconic modern landmarks. Inspired by the ancient Kingdom of Colchis, the fountain artistically recreates the rich historical and cultural memories of western Georgia. The fountain features a multi-tiered structure, with the striking golden horse sculptures at the top being a major highlight. Surrounding them are various animal statues, including lions, goats, and deer. These exaggerated, decorative figures create a visual effect that blurs the line between myth and reality. Modeled after ancient gold ornaments and artifacts unearthed in Georgia, these sculptures carry significant archaeological and historical symbolism. At night, the fountain is illuminated by a lighting system, making the golden statues stand out against the interplay of water and light, turning the entire square into a focal point of the city's nightscape. As one of the key urban landmarks of Kutaisi, it is not only a popular spot for tourists to take photos but also a public space for local residents to relax and gather.Kutaisi · 14.5 km from Kumistavi
Martvili Canyon

Martvili Canyon is located on the banks of the Abasha River near Gachedili village and is a canyon view included in the natural protection list. It was formed by the Abasha River cutting through limestone strata over many years, with a total length of approx. 2 km, a width mostly under 10 m, and cliff walls on both sides reaching tens of meters in height, creating a long, narrow, and deep landscape. The river water is a transparent turquoise all year round, with moss covering the cliff walls, complementing the dense surrounding subtropical vegetation; several small waterfalls over 10 m high hang between the cliff walls, with the sound of murmuring water, making the valley exceptionally tranquil. Taking a small boat along the Abasha River is the signature experience here: as the boat travels on the turquoise water, flanked by cliffs on both sides, waterfalls cascade down the nearby cliff walls, offering a perspective completely different from walking on the shore.Gachedili · 20.3 km from Kumistavi

Gelati Monastery

Gelati Monastery

King David IV, the "builder" of unified Georgia, built the Gelati Monastery in AD 1106, which symbolized the heyday of medieval Georgia. Today, the main building of the monastery, the Church of the Virgin, is still a relic of that era and the essence of the monastery. The church is full of frescoes, mainly including: the statue of the seven generations of Georgian monarchs on the north wall, the "builder" David IV who created the church, Bagrat III, the builder of Bagrati, etc. On the opposite wall, there is Constantine Statues of Emperor Ding and his mother Helena. In the church, you can also watch the statues of the Virgin and Child enshrined in the shrine, the Archangel Gabriel and Michael's covenant. The original east gate of the monastery has an inscribed door panel in Arabic, which is the spoils of war recovered from Ganj City when Dimitri, the son of David, the "builder", went on an expedition to Ganj. King David IV was buried under this door panel. inside the porch.Motsameta · 16.6 km from Kumistavi

Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi

Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi stands on Elia Hill on the left bank of the Mtkvari River and is the main cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church. The church adopts the traditional Georgian cross-dome architectural style, with the central dome covered in gold leaf and a gilded cross standing at the top, reaching a total height of nearly 100 m including the underground section. Thanks to its massive size and commanding position, its golden dome can be seen from almost anywhere in the city of Tbilisi. The interior of the church is also worth a close look. In the northeast corner, there is a mosaic icon of the Virgin Mary; the southeast corner houses a display case with a cross and a handwritten Bible; and the northwest corner displays a model of the holy city of Jerusalem made of mica. The church also has several chapels underground, and the main murals were painted by contemporary Georgian artists in a traditional style. In addition to the main cathedral, the entire complex includes auxiliary facilities such as a separate bell tower, a monastery, and a seminary, which are quite impressive in scale. As the mother church of the Georgian Orthodox Church, the cathedral hosts Orthodox rituals and religious activities all year round. The interior murals and mosaic decorations create a solemn religious atmosphere, and from the cathedral's platform, you can overlook the city of Tbilisi and the scenery on both banks of the Kura River.Georgia · Tbilisi

In 1994, Bagrati Cathedral, together with the Gelati Monastery, was included in UNESCO's World Heritage Site list as a single entity. In 2001, ownership of the cathedral was transferred from the Georgian state to the Georgian Orthodox Church. It is presently of limited use for religious services, but attracts many pilgrims and tourists. It is also frequently used as a symbol of the city of Kutaisi, being one of its main tourist attractions. I recommend to visit in the morning.

We went to Prometheus Cave from Batumi in July. The drive is long, about three hours, but it's worth it. Inside there are huge halls, illuminated stalactites and stalagmites, and classical music playing — the atmosphere is truly magical. The temperature is around 14 degrees, so after the summer heat it feels great, but bringing a jacket is a good idea. The groups are large and it's hard to hear the guide, so it's better to hang back and walk at your own pace. At the end of the route you can take a boat ride on the underground river for an extra fee — short but impressive. The only downside is the slippery steps, so watch your footing, and don't wear light-colored shoes. I'd recommend it, but keep in mind the crowds and the long drive.

The most striking feature of the church is undoubtedly its pure gold-clad dome, dazzling in the sunlight and exuding a gentle solemnity when illuminated at night. It's worth noting that the church's construction was primarily funded by donations from ordinary citizens—it's not just a building, but a symbol of Georgians rediscovering their faith and solidifying their national identity after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
