Plaza de la Paz
Plaza de la Pazis located in the center of the old town of Guanajuato, Mexico. Formerly known as the Main Square, this triangular plaza slopes gently with the terrain as the entire city is built into the hills, naturally possessing a unique, staggered charm. During the colonial era, the seats of church and administrative institutions were arranged around it, and the mansions of wealthy merchants who made their fortunes in silver mining also gathered in the surrounding area. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato faces the plaza directly, and together with old buildings such as the Municipal Palace, the Legislative Palace, and the Pérez Gálvez Mansion, they enclose what was once the heart of this mountain city. The Peace Monument in the center of the plaza is the focal point, built at the end of the 19th century to commemorate the end of the Mexican War of Independence and officially unveiled in the early 20th century. The bronze statue of the Goddess of Peace stands on a green stone and marble pedestal. Guanajuato's Peace Square is the busiest square in this ancient city. Many old buildings in Guanajuato are around this square. Citizens often sit and rest in the square. They just watch the tourists quietly, and feel that life is very relaxed. There are also frequent street performances on the streets, which are very exciting and worth appreciating.
