St. Mary's Church - Grand Street
No. 12 of Best Things to Do in Sri Lanka

St. Mary's Church - Grand Street

5.3
4.7/5
102 reviews
St. Mary's Church - Grand Streetis located in the city center of Negombo, Sri Lanka, and features a neoclassical architectural style. The exterior facade is primarily a soft, creamy white, with symmetrical and imposing colonnades. The architectural lines are simple and solemn, creating a striking visual contrast with the surrounding streets. Inside, the high, spacious nave creates an open and solemn atmosphere. The elegant, simple walls harmonize with the orderly architectural structure, giving the entire space a serene and dignified feel. In sharp contrast to the simple walls are the rich, exquisite religious frescoes on the nave ceiling. The stained glass windows inside the church are also a major highlight. Sunlight streams through the glass, casting soft, shifting colors onto the floor, walls, and altar, adding a dynamic play of light and shadow to the solemn space. As the angle of the light changes throughout the day, the colorful light and shadows complement the ceiling frescoes, giving the entire nave a rich visual depth.Negombo · 3.3 km from downtown

Negombo Lagoon

5.1

50 reviews
Negombo LagoonLocated on the west coast of Sri Lanka, it is a representative local coastal lagoon and natural wetland landscape. The lagoon is long and narrow, stretching over 10 km with a water area of approx. 3,000 hectares. Its southern end connects to the Muthurajawela Marsh, together forming a vast coastal wetland ecosystem. The water here is open, the waterways are winding, and the natural landscape along the shore is rich, featuring calm waters, dense mangroves, scattered small islands, and continuous coconut groves. Large areas of mangroves grow along the water's edge, with intertwined branches and leaves, providing a habitat and foraging environment for various bird species. Taking a small boat deep into the lagoon allows you to appreciate the lush mangrove foliage up close, observe water bird activity, and experience the scenery where the lake and coastal villages blend together from a water-level perspective.Negombo · 3.8 km from downtown

Negombo Beach

64 reviews
Negombo Beach stretches north from the town, along the shore hotel, until it disappears into the palm trees, narrow and long. Negombo's beaches are characterized by clear water and fine sand, which cannot be compared with many other beaches in Sri Lanka, and the color of the sea here is yellow due to estuary sewage, but people can still swim here. 1. Beach refurbishment Today, the beach has been refurbished and tidy, especially the big hotel standing along the beach is quite charming, and it only takes 5 minutes to walk there. Even if foreign tourists do not stay, they can enter the beach from the front of major hotels. It is worth mentioning that sunsets and sunsets at Negombo Beach are not to be missed. 2. Negombo Beach Park If you like liveliness and want to experience the local colorful customs, it is recommended to go to Negombo Beach Park to play and play under the guidance of locals.Negombo · 6.4 km from downtown

Most of the residents of Negombo believe in Catholicism, so the Buddhist temples here are quite special. Angel Kalam Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in the Negombo area. There is a 6-meter-long reclining Buddha in the temple, as well as countless exquisite Buddhist murals and statues of kings of various dynasties. Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque

5.2
4.5/5
80 reviews
Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque is located near Pettah Market. Construction began in 1908 and was completed the following year. Due to its striking red and white striped exterior walls, it is colloquially known by locals as the "Red Mosque" and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Colombo. It is said that in the days before high-rise buildings emerged around the harbor, sailors entering the port often used it to identify the port of Colombo. The entire building is a two-story structure made of red and white bricks, with stripes, domes, minarets, and a clock tower stacked in layers. Stylistically, it belongs to the Indo-Saracenic style, blending Indian Islamic and indigenous Indian architectural traditions, with Gothic Revival and Neoclassical elements.Colombo · 27.9 km from Negombo

St. Mary's Church is a very beautiful Catholic church with a very nice surrounding. If people here hold weddings, most of them will choose to hold them in St. Mary's Church, which is also a local landmark historical building.
