Ancient Town of Qingzhou

4.5/5
4.5k reviews
Qingzhou is one of the ancient nine provinces of China. Since the early Western Han Dynasty, six cities—Guang County, Guanggu City, Dongyang City, Nanyang City, Dongguan Weizi City, and Qicheng—were successively built on this land, with a continuous urban history spanning over two thousand years. Today, the Ancient Town of Qingzhou has been comprehensively protected and restored, forming three major districts: the Beiguan ancient block in Dongyang City, the Ouyuan historical and cultural block and the South Gate block in Nanyang City, and the Zhaode ancient block in Dongguan Weizi City. Government buildings, traditional residences, and classical gardens are scattered across hundreds of ancient streets and alleys, such as North Gate Street and East Gate Street, with their blue bricks and dark tiles showcasing distinct Ming and Qing architectural styles. Unlike many entirely reconstructed ancient towns, this is a "living ancient town," where original residents still live in the old streets and alleys, and intangible cultural heritage items like the cuoqin are passed down on the streets, blending the vibrancy of daily life with ancient charm. A visit can begin by ascending the Fucai Gate Tower at the south gate of ancient Nanyang City for a panoramic view of the town's sea of dark tiles. Ouyuan is a preserved classical garden within the town, originally the eastern garden of the Ming Dynasty's Prince of Heng's residence and later the private garden of Feng Pu, a grand secretary during the Qing Kangxi era. Its three-peak rockery embodies the grandeur of northern landscapes. Figures like Fan Zhongyan and Ouyang Xiu once served as officials here, and Li Qingzhao lived in Qingzhou for over a decade, composing numerous ci poems. Historical relics like the Qingzhou Prefecture Examination Hall are also scattered throughout the streets, where traces of this cultural legacy can often be encountered. The main street is densely lined with shops, but to avoid crowds, one can turn into the side alleys or head straight to Zhaode Ancient Street—where rows of Ming and Qing-era houses remain, with wooden doors, stone steps, and flagstone paths offering a glimpse of old Qingzhou's daily life.China · Qingzhou

The Best Spring In The World

The Best Spring In The World is located in downtown Jinan, featuring "one river (the moat), one lake (Daming Lake), three springs (the Baotu Spring, Heihu Spring, and Wulongtan spring clusters), and four parks (Baotu Spring Park, Huancheng Park, Wulongtan Park, and Daming Lake Park)." The attraction centers around Baotu Spring, renowned as the "No. 1 Spring Under Heaven." Its waters flow into rivers and converge into lakes, harmoniously blending with the ancient Mingfu City. To the north lies Wulongtan (Five Dragon Pool), while to the east stretches Jinan's Huancheng Park (home to the Black Tiger Spring and other springs), both highly celebrated in Jinan. These springs boast exceptional water quality. Daming Lake, a natural lake formed by the convergence of numerous springs, receives water from its southern shore. When full, the water flows out through the Northern Water Gate, built during the Song Dynasty on the lake's north shore. The lakebed consists of impermeable igneous rock, preventing flooding during heavy rains or drought. Often described as "a confluence of springs merging to embrace the Jiluo region," it's hailed as the "Pearl of the Spring City." Similarly, the moat formed by spring waters encircles the ancient city like a jade belt, offering scenic cruise rides along its course. The attraction boasts stunning natural scenery and rich cultural heritage, featuring not only springs, rivers, and lakes but also numerous historical landmarks. Highlights include the Chaoran Tower dating back to the Yuan Dynasty and the Luoyuan Hall originally built during the Northern Wei Dynasty (now a Ming-era structure). Historical sites include the Luoshang Terrace, the former residence site of Qin Qiong, and the Beishui Gate. Notable former residences include the Nanfeng Ancestral Hall, Jiaxuan Ancestral Hall, Li Qingzhao Memorial Hall and Yi'an Old Residence, Tiegong Ancestral Hall, and Lao She Memorial Hall. Red tourism sites include the Jinan Massacre Memorial and the former site of the Shandong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China.China · Jinan

During the Northern Song dynasty, Kaifeng Fu (Kaifeng Palace) was where Bao Zheng, the renowned "Justice Bao," served as the prefect. The original Kaifeng Fu of the Song dynasty was long destroyed by floods. What travelers see today is a recently reconstructed artificial ancient-style attraction. The gate of Kaifeng Fu (Kaifeng Palace) faces south, and travelers enter the attraction from here to begin their visit. The attraction is centered on buildings such as the main hall, conference hall, and Meihua hall, flanked by Kaifeng Fu-Tianqing temple, Mingli courtyard, Kaifeng Fu-Qianlong palace, Qingxin tower,Prison, Yingwu Tower, Yinbin Hall, and other halls of various sizes. Each hall is relatively small in scale. Travelers can follow the attraction map to visit the attractions along the central axis before exploring some attractions on both sides. Travelers can view the interior scenes of a Northern Song government office in the main hall and council chamber along the central axis. In the plum blossom hall in the northern part of the attraction, there are recreated scenes of Judge Bao adjudicating cases while "sitting southward in the yamen," complete with wax figures. West of the main gate, the view includes a prison office, Kaifeng Fu (Kaifeng Palace)-prison temple, death row cells, and gendered prison cells—all arranged with sculptures, torture devices, and scenes reflecting the penal administration of the Northern Song period. In the Qianlong hall and Qingxin tower east of the central axis, travelers can see statues of emperors Taizong, Zhenzong, and Qinzong of the Song dynasty, along with biographical introductions of all Kaifeng magistrates from the Northern Song era. Travelers can also watch many historical reenactment performances when visiting the attraction, such as "Yamen opening ceremony" and "Judge Bao presiding over a case".China · Kaifeng

The scale of the Kong Family Mansion is second in China only to the Forbidden City, and it served for hundreds of years as the long-term residence of Confucius's descendants. Located in Pei County, Jiangsu Province, the park is named after the Sishui Pavilion and the monument. Sishui Pavilion is the relic of the Han emperor Liu Bang's "trial as an official". The Qianlong edition of "Peixian Chronicle" states that "Han Gaozu was the chief of Sishui Pavilion, that is, this pavilion". In order to commemorate Liu Bang as the pavilion chief in Sishui, Pei people built the pavilion as a memorial. "Shui Jing Zhu" contains: "The county is governed by the south ridge, and there is a Sishui Pavilion on the east bank." "Tunnel Records" says, "Pei County Sishui Pavilion, the pavilion has Gaozu's stele, and Ban Gu is the text." It can be seen that the pavilion was built in the Han Dynasty, and the stele in the pavilion is still in the original text of Ban Gu. In the poem "Sitingyi, Supei County" by Wang Yu, a poet of the Ming Dynasty, there is a line in the poem "The enclave of dragons through the ages makes people feel a waste of happiness". There is also another famous historic site in Pei County, the Glazed Well, also known as the Eight Treasures Glazed Well. There are countless streaks in the stone fence of the well, which are said to be chiseled by Qin Shihuang. "Historical Records" records: "In the twenty-eighth year of Qin Shihuang's eastward journey, in order to suppress the qi of the emperor, he dug wells and ditches to cut off the king's veins."Pei County · 1.9 km from downtown

The Kaifeng Museum is a comprehensive museum integrating cultural relic collection, preservation, research, exhibition, and social education. It houses over 80,000 cultural relics, covering various categories such as pottery, porcelain, bronze ware, calligraphy and painting, stone carving, jade ware, and lacquerware. The old museum by Baogong lake opened in 1988, and in March 2018, it relocated to its current new site. The new museum's layout draws inspiration from the triple-city design of Kaifeng during the Northern Song dynasty, consisting of an outer perimeter, a circular inner courtyard, and a central main structure. Following the principle of "classical exterior, modern interior," lower surrounding buildings embrace the towering central pavilion. From a distance, it appears as a Song-style architectural complex, immersing visitors in the essence of Song culture even before entering. The Kaifeng museum was established in March 1962. Its original site was located on Sansheng street, built on the former site of the Henan museum after it moved to Zhengzhou. The first floor of the Kaifeng museum's Zhongyi lake section consists of a public service area, exhibition area, and cultural relic restoration area. The public service area includes: a visitor center, an academic lecture hall, an educational experience zone, a cultural and creative display center, a 4D cinema, and a VIP reception room. It was great. I explored the Ouyuan Garden and the main street thoroughly, but didn't have time to visit the other alleys and attractions. The church wasn't open, but there were a few cultural and creative shops, and I bought quite a few things. Dong Ge's noodles were delicious; I ordered the pork intestine noodles, which were tasty and only 18 yuan, not expensive.

A huge thank you to our guide today, Ms. Feng Ping. Her solid historical knowledge allowed her to vividly and clearly explain the historical stories behind the Shang and Zhou dynasties' ritual systems, diverse cultures, and the custom of "clinking cups and exchanging toasts." The entire three-hour tour was incredibly rich in content. The overall logic was excellent. The opening provided a general overview of the museum, and the content flowed smoothly between the exhibition halls. Her pacing was superb, bringing the profound Central Plains civilization to life. I felt so fortunate to have met Ms. Feng Ping; she's a perfect museum guide in China!

This was my first time visiting Baotu Spring. I went in the afternoon to avoid the crowds, so the experience wasn't too bad. The three springs were bubbling away, and the water was crystal clear. No wonder it's called the City of Springs! 👍

The architecture is magnificent. Climbing Qingxin Tower at sunset offers a panoramic view of Bao Gong Lake, which is incredibly photogenic (although my photography skills are quite limited). There weren't many people. Because of limited time, I didn't get to see many worthwhile places, watch any shows, or participate in any scripted tours, which is a real shame. I'll definitely make the most of it next time. Oh, and I actually found a miniature Fu Hao owl-shaped bronze vessel in a very dark room in the west wing of Gongkui Tower.

A day trip to Qufu: I bought a combined ticket for the three Confucius sites (Confucius Temple, Confucius Mansion, and Confucius Cemetery), but only visited the Confucius Temple and Confucius Mansion. The Confucius Temple is definitely worth hiring a guide to listen to a lecture and stroll around at your own pace. The Confucius Museum is very large and beautiful, with a large collection of cultural relics. I recommend starting your trip to Qufu with the Confucius Museum, and then visiting the three Confucius sites. The museum is free; you can just scan your ID card. You can easily spend half a day there.

One island, two bays, offering a variety of activities. Dasha Bay boasts a wide, soft beach, perfect for families to play in the sand, swim, and enjoy the water, with well-developed facilities. Suma Bay is quieter, with more reefs and relatively clearer water; the central seaside boardwalk is the highlight, offering panoramic views of the mountains, sea, and reefs—ideal for taking photos on a clear day, and also providing access to the peacock garden.
