Golden Circle

4.4/5

Golden Circleis a classic, iconic tourist route in Iceland that connects three natural and historical landmarks northeast of Reykjavik into a small loop that most travelers can complete in one day. Thingvellir National Park is situated on the rift valley at the boundary of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, serving as both the site of Iceland's ancient parliament and a place where you can walk along trails between the fissures to intuitively experience the geological wonder of the two plates slowly drifting apart; in the Haukadalur geothermal valley, Geysir is the source of the English word "geyser," while its neighbor, Strokkur, is more active today, sending scalding columns of water into the air every few minutes; and Gullfoss waterfall concludes the itinerary with its majestic two-tiered cascade and canyon scenery. Each of the three stops offers something unique, allowing you to take in geology, geothermal activity, and water features all in one day, making it the perfect introductory route for experiencing the essence of Iceland's nature and history.Blaskogabyggd · 17.2 km from Reykholt

Geysir

Geysiris located in the Haukadalur geothermal valley in southwestern Iceland and is an important stop on the Golden Circle route. The English word "geyser" originates from the Great Geysir here. Historically, the Great Geysir has erupted with boiling water columns reaching tens of meters high, but nowadays it is mostly quiet and dormant, rarely erupting. The real star is Strokkur, located just a short distance to the south, which erupts every few to 10 minutes. The azure water first churns in the center of the vent, forming a blue bubble, and in the next second, it bursts open with a roar, sending a water column shooting into the air. It usually reaches over 10 m high, and sometimes erupts 2 or 3 times in succession. The entire eruption lasts only a few seconds, so when you see the water surface bubble up, hold your breath and raise your camera. If you stand here patiently for a while, you will almost certainly be able to catch several of Strokkur's performances in a row.Blaskogabyggd · 17 km from Reykholt
Bruarfoss Waterfall

Bruarfoss Waterfall

Tiffany Blue Waterfall is located in southern Iceland and is renowned for its rare blue-green water, named for its resemblance to the color Tiffany Blue. The water originates from Langjökull Glacier meltwater. Fine rock powder suspended in the meltwater gives the water a unique blue luster when refracted by sunlight, and the dark basalt riverbed further enhances this visual effect. The waterfall is approx. 10m wide and formed by the convergence of multiple streams. Some sections have rapid currents, and the surrounding area is covered with tundra vegetation and volcanic rock landscapes. Along the way, you can pass by many small streams and waterfalls. The entire route travels through typical Icelandic tundra landscapes and is one of the representative routes for experiencing the highland landscapes of southern Iceland.Blaskogabyggd · 10 km from Reykholt

As one of the must-see attractions in Iceland, the Golden Falls have a reason to do their part. The river flows straight down from a height of 32 meters and is divided into two levels. From a distance, it looks like two rainbows rushing along the Great Rift Valley. The scene is very spectacular. After a heavy rain, you can also see a large rainbow across the waterfall. A monument was erected next to the waterfall in memory of a civilian woman.Hrunamannahreppur · 23.8 km from Reykholt

Kerið crater lake was formed by a volcanic eruption 6,500 years ago and later filled with rainwater, creating this oval-shaped crater lake with a depth of approx. 55 m and a diameter ranging from 170 m to 270 m. Due to absorbing minerals from the surrounding soil, the water exhibits an eerie greener hue, making it one of the world's more famous crater lakes. The crimson volcanic rock walls encircle the emerald lake, creating a striking color contrast. Walking trails have been built around the lake for travelers to explore, offering multiple vantage points to admire the volcanic landscape, with some paths leading directly to the lakeshore. Located beside the Golden Circle route in Iceland, it provides convenient access and vividly showcases the unique terrain shaped by Iceland's volcanic activity, making it an ideal destination to experience the geological wonders of this land of fire and ice.Grimsnes- og Grafningshreppur · 25.1 km from Reykholt

Thingvellir National Park National Park is located approximately 45 km east of Reykjavik and is a key landmark of both historical and geological significance in Iceland. In 930 AD, Iceland's first national parliament was established here. It is one of the longest-running parliamentary institutions known in the world, and today it remains a venue for important national celebrations for Icelanders. The park is situated at the junction of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. The great rift clearly displays the boundary between the two continental plates, allowing visitors to intuitively experience the landscape formed by crustal rifting. In 2004, Thingvellir National Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its dual historical and geological value. Additionally, it is also widely known among fans as a filming location for the American TV series "Game of Thrones".Blaskogabyggd · 31.5 km from Reykholt

Silfrais located in Thingvellir National Park, Iceland, and is a water-filled fissure torn open at the boundary between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. Formed in 1789, the two plates are still slowly drifting apart at a rate of approx. 2 cm per year, making it one of the few places in the world where you can snorkel or dive between two tectonic plates. The water in the fissure comes from the Langjokull Glacier, located tens of km away. The meltwater seeps into porous volcanic rock layers and, after years of natural filtration, emerges from underground. It is exceptionally clear, with underwater visibility exceeding 100 m. The blue and green hues of the water constantly shift with depth and light, and when sunlight refracts, it can even cast a rainbow on the bottom of the fissure. The water temperature here remains at approx. 2–4°C year-round. Because the water is constantly flowing underground, it does not freeze, allowing for diving and snorkeling experiences all year round.Blaskogabyggd · 32.4 km from Reykholt

The Blue Lagoon is located in Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland. It is a geothermal hot spring formed by volcanic lava. The water temperature is about 37-39 degrees Celsius. The lake water is rich in minerals such as silicon and sulfur, making it appear faint blue. Hot spring experience The Blue Lagoon has now become a symbol of Iceland. Many people who come to Iceland will choose to take a good bath here. Volcanic mud mask Don't forget to apply some silica mud on your face as a mask when taking a hot spring bath. The silica mud here is volcanic mud, which contains many minerals. Sauna In addition, you can also go to the sauna on the shore to steam for a while, and then come out to continue soaking. If it snows, it feels very unusual to immerse your body in warm water and look up at the white snow flying all over the sky.Iceland · Grindavik

Seljalandsfoss

93 reviews
Seljalandsfoss has a drop of approx. 60m, with water sourced from glacial meltwater. The waterfall's unique feature is a natural recessed path at the base of the cliff, where visitors can walk behind the water curtain to experience the roar of the cascading water and the surrounding mist up close. Looking out from behind the curtain, the view of the distant fields and horizon through the splashing water offers a unique and picturesque perspective, making it a favorite spot for photography enthusiasts. Sunset is an ideal time to capture the view from behind the curtain, as the warm light of the setting sun shines through the water from the west, creating exceptionally rich layers of light and shadow. When walking along the path, be mindful of the slippery rocks underfoot. The dense mist can also wet your clothing and electronic devices, so it is necessary to prepare waterproof gear in advance.Rangarthing eystra · 66.7 km from Reykholt

There are many volcanoes in Iceland, and this one is relatively famous. You can hike around the entire crater. In addition, you can take the stairs directly to the lake in the crater. The water is very clear and typical volcanic ash landforms can be seen around it.

Thingvellir National Park is a spectacular destination where Iceland’s dramatic nature and fascinating history come together. The park features rugged landscapes, clear waters, lava fields, and impressive geological formations created by the movement of tectonic plates. I loved walking through the peaceful surroundings and enjoying the breathtaking views of mountains and valleys. The atmosphere feels incredibly fresh and open, making it a wonderful place to slow down and appreciate Iceland’s natural beauty. Thingvellir is also historically significant, adding another layer of interest to the visit. With its unique geology, scenic trails, and peaceful atmosphere, this national park is an unforgettable experience and definitely deserves a place on any Iceland itinerary.

This is one of the most distinctive waterfalls in Iceland, and you can enjoy it from behind the waterfall. It is 120 kilometers away from the capital Reykjavik, located on Highway 1 around the island. You can visit here as part of a tour around the island, or as a day trip in Reykjavik. It is worth checking out.
