Baikonur launch pad no. 1 is a landmark in the history of human spaceflight. In 1957, the world’s first artificial satellite lifted off from here. On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin launched from here aboard Vostok 1 and completed humanity’s first flight into space. The main structure of the launch pad is a 40m-square steel launch platform, as tall as a three-story building, assembled from 16 sets of railway bridge trusses. During the visit, visitors can see the launch facilities used to prepare rockets and look down into the launch silo from which rockets once lifted off. More than 3 km from the launch platform, the underground command center is a reinforced bunker nearly the size of a soccer field.
