Nam Song River

4.7/5
107 reviews
Nam Song River winds around the town, flanked by continuous limestone karst peaks. The reflections of the mountains on the water are somewhat reminiscent of the scenery in Guilin. This river is the center stage for outdoor activities in Vang Vieng: kayaking or rafting downstream is a signature local experience, drifting past cave entrances, rice paddies, and riverside villages. For a more relaxed pace, you can also sit in a large inner tube and slowly drift downstream. In the dry season, the river is shallow and the current is gentle, making it suitable for beginners. In the rainy season, the water level rises and the current speeds up, offering more excitement and a greater test of physical strength. When you're not in the water, the Nam Song River is still worth seeing. The town is right next to the riverbank, making it easy to reach the water on foot or by bicycle. Cafes and restaurants are scattered along the shore. Ordering a coffee and gazing at the green mountains is the typical Vang Vieng slow life. At dusk, the setting sun dyes the karst peaks a warm orange, pedestrians cross the bamboo bridges, and rows of colorful kayaks drift across the river—this scene is the iconic image of Vang Vieng in many travel photos. If you just want a quiet walk, looking at the fields and villages on the opposite bank is also a great way to experience the rural atmosphere of Laos.Pakpo · 450m from downtown

Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon is nestled among the karst mountains and is an attraction that combines caving and water activities. Tham Poukham Cave is considered quite sacred by the locals. The main chamber has a skylight at the top, where sunlight pours down, illuminating a Thai-style bronze reclining Buddha. Locals often come here to offer incense and pray. Several deep tunnels branch off from the main chamber, leading deep into the heart of the mountain, where stalactites and stalagmites stand in the darkness. The cave entrance is located on a limestone cliff halfway up the mountain, requiring a climb along a steep path. Fortunately, there are handrails on the steeper sections. After working up a sweat from the climb, it is the perfect time to cool off in the lagoon at the foot of the mountain. The Blue Lagoon is formed by water flowing out of the cave. The water is clear and deep blue, with schools of fish visible to the naked eye. The water temperature is cool year-round, making it very refreshing to jump in. Swing ropes hang from the large trees by the lake, and there is a diving platform nearby where you can swing out to the middle of the lake before letting go to enter the water. Some people also zip-line over the lake, causing those in the water to look up. There are several blue lagoons around Vang Vieng. This one is more popular because Tham Poukham Cave and the lagoon are in the same location. The water appears even bluer during the dry season, making it perfect for combining hiking, caving, and water activities into one itinerary.Vang Vieng · 5.8 km from downtown

The huge Tempukhan cave is a sacred place in the hearts of Lao people, and most of the reason for its popularity is because of the lagoon in the cave. After a hard climb, taking a dip in this beautiful turquoise lagoon is just wonderful. The main cave houses a Thai-style bronze reclining Buddha. There are very primitive countryside scenery along the way to the Tempukan cave, and several deep tunnels branch from the main cave into the mountainside. There is a small river at the foot of the mountain for rest, and there is a big tree beside the river. Many people climb on the tree and jump into the river to enjoy the comfort of indulging in the flowing water.Vang Vieng · 5.1 km from downtown

Tanjiang Karst Cave is also known as Tamu Chang Cave. It is the famous cave of Vang Vieng. The main cave itself is not an attraction, but it offers gorgeous views of the river valley through gaps in the limestone walls. Tanjiang Karst Cave is not famous for the cave, but for the small pool outside the cave. The water source of the small pool comes from the cave at the foot of the mountain. The spring water is clear and you can swim and play in the spring.Vang Vieng · 2.7 km from downtown

Vang Vieng tire rafting is a popular way of rafting in Vang Vieng. Tourists can rent tires at the agency GreenDiscovery, and then set off to the upper Nansong River to start rafting. On the way of rafting, there are many bars by the river. If you want to go up and rest, just wave, and the waiter of the bar will drag you ashore. Many bars have diving platforms where you can jump into the Southern Song River. The place marked "The End of Tubing" in the lower reaches of the river is the end of the rafting. You need to find a place nearby to go ashore, and then carry the tires or electric boats back to the store.Vang Vieng · 1.2 km from downtown

A beautiful scenery on my early biking tour to the three blue lagoons, cave Phu kham, Blue Spring and Patong cave! Cycling here is extremely difficult because it was foggy, dry and no wind! I’m glad I still managed to do it and 11 miles is not bad! 😍

Vang Vieng is the capital of outdoor sports, and hot air ballooning is one of the must-do activities. We booked Impression Travel, and the cost was 680 RMB per person (one-third the price in Turkey). They picked us up from the hotel around 4 PM, and the flight time was about 45 minutes. There are two time slots a day: watching the sunrise in the morning and the sunset in the evening. It was a wonderful experience.

One of the best caves I have been to, it’s massive in the cave and need a light, I used my phone light and that was fine, but for KIP 10,000 you can hire a head torch. It’s in the same place as the Blue Lagoon 1 so you can do both for KIP 20,000.

The weather is good. It's better to go during the rainy season. Blue Lagoon 1 has very clear water. The entrance fee is not expensive and it's not far from Vientiane. It takes about 2 hours to drive there.

It is a very beautiful place. The atmosphere is shady and suitable for relaxation. There are many interesting things. The way up is very brutal, but the view is worth it.
