Pearl Harbor

4.8/5

Pearl Harbor is located on the southern coast of Oahu, Hawaii, west of downtown Honolulu. It is a natural deep-water harbor extending inland, surrounded by land on three sides with only the southern entrance facing the sea. On the morning of December 7, 1941, the Japanese naval air force launched a surprise attack on the U.S. Pacific Fleet stationed here. The battleship USS Arizona sank in less than ten minutes after being hit, with over a thousand officers and crew perishing aboard, marking America's full entry into World War II. Today, the harbor area has been designated as a historical attraction, comprising four venues: the USS Arizona Memorial, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, the submarine museum, and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. A full tour typically takes most of a day. Visits usually begin at the visitor center of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial: two exhibit halls display artifacts, photos, and footage depicting the ships, aircraft, and casualties on both sides before and after the attack. After watching the documentary, visitors take a shuttle boat to the white memorial spanning the sunken wreckage of the USS Arizona in the middle of the harbor. The bridge-shaped structure does not touch the ship's remains. Its 21 openings symbolize the 21-gun salute honoring the fallen. Through floor openings, visitors can view the rusted hull beneath the water, where oil droplets—known as "black tears"—still seep to the surface. The memorial hall at the far end bears the names of the thousand-plus crew members who went down with the ship, and the U.S. flag on the sunken mast is raised daily. This is a resting place for sailors, and visitors are expected to maintain solemn silence throughout the tour. While the USS Arizona witnessed the beginning of the Pacific War, the Battleship Missouri on Ford Island marked its end—Japan signed its surrender on its deck on September 2, 1945. Visitors can explore the deck, cabins, and bridge, with views of the white memorial across the water. The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, housed in the original hangars attacked that day, still bears visible bullet holes on its walls. The island also features memorials for the USS Oklahoma and USS Utah. Access to Ford Island requires a shuttle transfer from the visitor center. The Bowfin submarine, docked nearby, conducted multiple wartime patrols; visitors can step inside to experience life in a submariner's quarters. Practical tip: Security is strict, and regular backpacks are not allowed, so travel light.Honolulu · 23.2 km from Waianae

The USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor was inaugurated in 1980 and sits directly above but not touching the wreck of the USS Arizona that was sunk in the attack on Pearl Harbor. The exhibition hall is about half the size of a basketball court. There is a 1:96 restoration model of the USS Arizona at the entrance and the remains and memorial model of the USS Arizona underwater. The exhibition room also displays precious items left by the USS Arizona, such as the frigates from the USS Arizona, the uniforms and trophies of the USS Arizona Sailors' American football team, etc., which were salvaged after the USS Arizona sank. There was also a character introduction session during the visit. The two characters introduced were Admiral Isaac C Kidd, the captain of the USS Arizona, and Paxton C. Kidd, a sailor at the time. Carter (Paxton Carter). They were all generals and sailors who died aboard the USS Arizona on the day of Pearl Harbor. The ruins of the shipwreck are still lying quietly in their original position, and there are still docks where other warships once docked on both sides of it. Each dock is marked with the name of the ship that docked at that time and the US Navy number. Visible Nevada (BB36), Westerle (AR4), Tennessee (BB43) and so on. The site memorial was built in the form of a command bridge across the sea from the middle of the wreck. The memorial is divided into three parts, the entrance, the shipwreck exhibition hall and the Memorial to the fallen. The entire memorial is a white building, with dignified writing above the gate at the entrance: USSARIZONAMEMORIAL is located in the hall on the back side, which is a monument to the fallen soldiers.Honolulu · 26.6 km from Waianae

Since 1999, the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle colony has formed the habit of basking and resting ashore at Green Turtle Beach on the North Shore of Oahu. The natural environment of Green Turtle Beach is what turtles love: abundant food - seaweed, reef-covered bays - to keep out large waves and predators (sharks), and wide sand (for warmth and rest).Haleiwa · 22.5 km from Waianae

Of the fifty states in the United States, only Hawaii has ever been ruled by a king. Therefore, it is only natural that the bronze statue of King Kamehameha has become a must-see attraction for tourists who come to Hawaii. Every June, Hawaiians celebrate "King Kamehameha Day". The number of flower garlands presented on the bronze statue of King Kamehameha becomes a scene, and some garlands are as long as 5.5 meters.Honolulu · 36.7 km from Waianae

Straw Hat Island is an independent island close to the Gualani Ranch. It is named because of its shape very similar to the straw hats of ancient Chinese people. Straw Hat Island, also known as Dou Li Island, is a bird sanctuary, so it can only be seen from a distance, not close. Many people come here to appreciate it from a distance on the beach on the opposite side of it. Because of the clear waters and calm waters in this area, it is also suitable for swimming and snorkeling. It should be noted, however, that there are no official showers here. Also, you can see a lot of people surfing in this area.Honolulu · 37.7 km from Waianae

Japan killed 2,403 Americans during the Pearl Harbor attack and 35,000,000 Chinese during the world war 2. Seeing the USS Arizona Memorial and crying Chinese baby lost parents is hard. The site kept and explained the history well. I highly recommend everyone who like learning about history and love peace to visit. I feel this is the most important site to visit in Honolulu. 珍珠港

Every shot is a beautiful sight, very pleasing to the eye. The largest island in Hawaii is Oahu, the most prosperous and youthful, known as a surfer's paradise. Pearl Harbor is the beautiful pain of this island.

Fun for Families & Photos, But Skippable for Solo Travelers 🍍 (6/10)The Dole Plantation is one of those places you hear about constantly when visiting Oʻahu, so I decided to check it out for myself. Here’s my honest take.Yes, the pineapple maze is huge—it even holds a world record—and riding the little train through the plantation to see how pineapples grow is pleasant enough. The grounds are well-kept, and you can definitely take some cute, colorful photos among the tropical plants. For kids or teenagers, I can see this being a fun couple of hours. Families seem to genuinely enjoy it.But as a solo traveler? I found very little that truly engaged me. The maze felt more tiring than thrilling without a group to laugh with. The train ride is short and a bit too slow-paced for an adult traveling alone. Even the famous Dole Whip, while tasty, isn't worth making a special trip for.Everything feels designed for groups, photo ops, or keeping young children entertained. There's no deep cultural or historical immersion, no real adventure, and not much for a solo adult to sink their teeth into.

🏖Beautiful beach check-in spot ● Naxianghai Diamond Beach: The sand here is as fine as powder, shining in the sun, and the sea water is clear and has a charming gradient color🌊. In the evening, the afterglow of the sunset sprinkles on the beach, and the whole picture is as beautiful as a movie scene. It is a blockbuster with just a casual shot. Strolling along the beach, blowing the sea breeze, and feeling the good years, it is simply too comfortable. ● Jinshiwan Art Park: The seaweed houses in the park are unique and are a typical representative of Jiaodong traditional architecture. They are scattered on the seaside, set off by the sea, blue sky, and grass, full of artistic atmosphere🎨. Here, you can slow down, appreciate the unique architectural style, and take literary and fresh photos from all angles. ● Xiaoshi Island: It is a treasure check-in spot in Weihai! During the day, the sea water is sparkling, suitable for walking along the beach and riding the waves🌊. In the evening, this is a great place to watch the sunset at sea. The sun slowly sets, dyeing the sky orange-red, and the entire sea surface is shrouded in afterglow, which is breathtakingly beautiful. It is also a good place to go to the sea. When the tide is low, you can bring small tools to experience the fun of catching crabs and digging clams. 🏘A good place for humanities ● Liugong Island: As an important witness to China's modern history, Liugong Island carries rich historical and cultural connotations. There is the Sino-Japanese War Museum on the island, which displays a large number of precious historical relics and materials, vividly showing that magnificent history. When you board Liugong Island, it seems that you can travel through time and space, feel the golden weapons and iron horses of the year, and have a deeper understanding and thinking of history💪. ● Weihai Huaxia City: Here, natural landscapes and cultural landscapes are cleverly combined. There is the magnificent first archway in China, the simple and elegant Xia Garden, and the wonderful landscape performance. Here, you can enjoy the beautiful garden scenery, feel the strong cultural atmosphere, watch the shocking performances, and appreciate the charm of Weihai in all aspects🎊. 🍱Special food is not to be missed ● Weihai barbecue: Weihai's barbecue is unique, featuring seafood barbecue. Fresh squid, oysters, scallops, etc., are grilled on charcoal fire, with golden and crispy skin, tender and juicy inside, and sprinkled with special seasonings, the fragrance is overflowing, making people salivate🍗. 🎈Tips for playing ● Transportation: The transportation in Weihai is relatively convenient, and buses can reach most attractions. If you want to travel more freely, renting a car and driving yourself is also a good choice, and you can also enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way🚗. ● Accommodation options: If you like lively, you can choose to live in the city; if you want to get close to the sea, the seaside homestay is a good choice, and you can see the beautiful sea view as soon as you open your eyes in the morning🏨. ● Seasonal recommendation: Summer (June-August) is the peak tourist season in Weihai. The weather is warm and suitable for swimming and water sports. Autumn (September-November) has clear skies and plump seafood. You can taste a variety of fresh seafood, which is also a good time to travel🌞.

There are many famous beaches on the northern coast of Oahu. My favorite is Green Turtle Beach in the northeast of Oahu. Here, we really saw precious green sea turtles. The staff used ropes to circle the area around the turtles to prevent tourists from entering and disturbing the turtles. The ecology here is really great.

Straw Hat Island is named after its shape that resembles a straw hat. Basically, everyone will just look at it from the beach like we did, or you can take a cruise to see it up close. There are many birds living on the island, and it is also a geographical landmark.
