|||. Escape the winter and enjoy the summer: Laid-back 3-day tour in Xishuangbanna|||
D1: Arrive in Xishuangbanna at noon—First experience with 'assembly line Dai girls' photo shoot—Dai-style barbecue
D2: Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences—Starlight Night Market
D3: Total Buddha Temple—Manting Park—Prajna Temple—Leave Xishuangbanna in the evening
Assembly line Dai girls: There are probably hundreds of travel photography shops in Gaozhuang, I randomly chose one with a high cost-performance ratio. I really like the traditional Dai costumes, the makeup artist is patient and listens to the customers' opinions, but the photo shoot is basically an assembly line. After the photographer is done, my friends and I took photos of each other, and after comparing the photos, I still prefer the ones we took ourselves.
Chinese Academy of Sciences Botanical Garden:
Transportation: Not wanting to join a day tour group and worried about not being able to hail a car on the spot, I booked a 6-seater business car from Jinghong to Mengla in advance on the 'Banna Travel' 'Intercity Express' section on 🍊, choosing my hotel as the pick-up point and 'CAS Botanical Garden' as the drop-off point. The driver contacted us in advance and even arrived early on the day we set off. For the return trip, we took a Didi back to Gaozhuang.
Touring: We didn't buy the sightseeing car for the West Zone, which is not very big and not too hot to walk around, and it also helps to avoid the crowds. When entering the garden, get a tour map and follow the signs to avoid getting lost. There are snack stalls at the entrance of the Exotic Flower Garden, and the food tastes good. After lunch, we bought tickets for the East Zone sightseeing car at the tour bus transfer station, because the East Zone is very large and primitive, and cannot be explored on foot. The first stop is at the Green Stone Forest, which requires climbing high. After a casual stroll, we took the car to the next stop, the tropical rainforest, which has attractions like large buttress roots and strangler figs, very interesting and photogenic. If there is not enough time to explore the East Zone, you can skip the Green Stone Forest and get off directly at this stop.
Total Buddha Temple, Manting Park: Manting Park was still limiting visitors, and tickets had to be purchased on the spot. We took a taxi to the Total Buddha Temple, toured it, and then entered Manting Park. There were too many people, and those who don't like crowds felt that the experience was just average. After leaving the Total Buddha Temple, we took a taxi to Prajna Temple. We tried various apps to hail a car, and after waiting in the scorching sun for half an hour, we finally got one, and it wasn't cheap.
Prajna Temple: Prajna Temple is all silver and white with a unique design. No admission fee is required, but appropriate dress is necessary, with shorts or skirts above the knee not being okay.
Eat Eat Eat: Didn't really check in at internet-famous restaurants, just casually looked for food~
Nanwan Dai·Dai Family Sapie Rice Noodles: The first meal we had in Banna and the most memorable one of our entire Yunnan trip. Later in Kunming, we had N different kinds of rice noodles, and after comparing, we still liked Sapie the most, as it has a unique taste.
Dai Le Coffee: When in Banna, you must try the bagged Laotian iced coffee~ It tastes quite good.
Cool Thai: Affordable Thai food, we ordered mango sticky rice, Tom Yum soup, Thai fried rice, pounded chicken feet, etc., none of them were disappointing, all were devoured~
Tips:
Pay attention to sun protection, sunglasses, sunscreen, and hats are essential~
We hurriedly played for less than three days and then went to Kunming. The holiday with lots of people was not as enjoyable as we hoped. Next time, we will find a less crowded time, explore some niche places, and have a better experience.
Xishuangbanna Prajna Temple is far more than just a popular "Instagrammable" spot; it's a tranquil place where you can find peace and appreciate the weight of history, the beauty of its architecture, and the devotion of its people. If you're interested in Buddhist culture, architecture, or photography, it's definitely worth a special trip.
I visited this place on December 4th, 2025, at noon. It's free to enter, and the temple is located on a hilltop next to Gasa Airport, offering views of planes taking off and landing. The white stupa in the temple is exquisite and majestic, truly shining brightly under the blue sky and white clouds. It's also a popular spot for tourists to take photos. Many visitors pour water on the ground in front of the stupa and take pictures of its reflection, which is very beautiful.
🌈 Prajna Temple is a Theravada Buddhist temple located in Jinghong City, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province. It blends traditional Dai architecture with Theravada Buddhist characteristics. The building is silvery-white, with a towering circular spire at its center, surrounded by a forest of pagodas. Four seated guardian deities flank the pagoda, and within, a golden Buddha and seven week Buddhas are enshrined, giving it a distinctly Southeast Asian feel. This spot has become a popular Instagram post due to its photogenic appeal, especially on sunny days with blue skies and white clouds. The photos are truly stunning. A puddle of water on the ground provides even more stunning reflections. The temple is free and open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Visitors are required to wear long pants. Women wearing shorts can change into free long skirts at the entrance. You can also experience sutra copying and meditation. The temple is approximately 5 kilometers from the city center and is easily accessible by taxi.
Prajna Temple is located in Jinghong City, Xishuangbanna. It is a temple in the Southern Buddhism style. The 39-meter-high pagoda in the temple is shaped like a lotus. The white pagoda and the golden Buddha statue complement each other. The traditional Dai architecture is cleverly integrated with modern design. During the annual Water Splashing Festival, the temple holds a Buddha bathing ceremony, and believers use holy water to bless the Buddha statue. Visitors need to wear long pants to enter, and can experience copying scriptures or meditation. The temple is a 30-minute drive from the city, and self-driving is recommended. It closes at 6:30, so pay attention to your itinerary.
I came to Banna to relax for a few days in winter. I often come here but I don’t have the interest to visit scenic spots anymore. I went out for a walk early this morning. Following the mountain shape, I saw a white pagoda, which was eye-catching in Banna, which is full of golden Buddhist temples. The temple is called Prajna Temple, which means wisdom. It is said to have been built during the Peacock Kingdom period. It has been rebuilt many times in history. Now it is a building rebuilt in 2014, which feels very new. For some reason, this temple, which claims to have a thousand-year history, does not seem to be well-known. There are no signs or tickets along the way. There is a simple parking lot at the door. Next to it is a large pit dug by a residential developer. A temple stands alone on the hillside, which highlights its uniqueness. The pagoda occupies most of the temple. It is silver-white as a whole and has exquisite craftsmanship. Under the blue sky and white clouds, it is dignified and refined, with a strong Southeast Asian style. Personally, I feel that although Banna has unique ethnic culture and tropical landscape resources, it is worth learning from neighboring Southeast Asian countries in terms of the overall urban construction and the development and protection of historical culture and traditional culture.
Very beautiful~ Recommended~ Friendly reminder: remember to sprinkle water on the ground and take photos with reflections~ I didn’t know this photography technique until I left~
Xishuangbanna Prajna Temple Located in the suburbs of Jinghong City, it is a Southern Buddhism temple. There is a large white pagoda in the temple, which houses a golden Buddha statue. The building is symmetrical from any angle, giving people a sense of stable balance. It has both the traditional Dai architectural style and the Southeast Asian style. The tall and straight pagoda shines with sacred silver light under the blue sky and white clouds, giving people a sense of holiness and solemnity. The stone carvings are meticulously crafted, and the complex shapes and lace remind people of the Rococo style that was once popular in Europe. Strategy Transportation: Five kilometers away from the city, 1.5 kilometers walk from the end of No. 2 bus, there is no shared bicycle parking in the temple. It is not far from Mengle Grand Buddha Temple, so you can watch it together. Price: Free. Time: Open at 8 o'clock, 20 minutes of tour. April to November is the best tourist season. Xishuangbanna has no industry, the air is very good, the local area is close to Laos and Thailand, full of exotic customs, simple folk customs, affordable consumption, and fair treatment. Accommodation and meals: You need to take a bus to the city.
As one of the few free attractions in Xishuangbanna, Prajna Temple is worth a visit. Prajna Temple is not big. You can follow the monks to circle the Buddha statue three times to ward off disasters and pray for blessings. Not far away is Manjingbao Village, where you can eat authentic Dai food.
