It's said to be the center of Theravada Buddhism, similar to the Potala Palace in Tibetan Buddhism. It is indeed exquisitely built. I sat cross-legged in front of the Buddha statue on the second floor of the main hall for a while, and it felt quite nice. Walking slowly through the entire area takes half an hour to an hour.
The Xishuangbanna General Buddhist Temple, known as "Wabaji" in the Dai language, was the first Buddhist temple built in Xishuangbanna after the introduction of Theravada Buddhism, and its construction began in 615 AD. It blends Dai and Southeast Asian Buddhist architectural styles, with gold as its main color, featuring golden spires, dragon-shaped eaves, and exquisite murals, creating a magnificent and resplendent appearance. The temple's main hall and other buildings are solemn and grand, and it also houses ancient palm-leaf scriptures. As the highest-ranking Buddhist temple in Xishuangbanna, it oversees more than 590 temples, serving as a royal temple supported by the Dai royal family and an important link in the exchange of Buddhist culture with Southeast Asia.
Jinghong General Buddhist Temple, located at No. 18 Baji Road, Jinghong City, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, adjacent to Manting Park, is the center of worship for Buddhist believers in Xishuangbanna. The temple, known as "Wabaji" in the Dai language, was first built in 615 AD. Legend has it that it was constructed by Burmese monks and was the first Buddhist temple built after Theravada Buddhism was introduced to Xishuangbanna. 700 years ago, it was designated as the highest-ranking Buddhist temple in Xishuangbanna, overseeing more than 590 temples in the prefecture. Historically, the temple has undergone several reconstructions, finally being restored in 1989. In 1990, lay Buddhist Zhao Puchu personally inscribed the name "Xishuangbanna General Buddhist Temple." The architecture blends Dai and Southeast Asian Buddhist architectural styles, with a predominantly golden color scheme. Golden spires, dragon-shaped eaves, and exquisite murals create a magnificent and exotic atmosphere. The main buildings within the temple include the Vihan Hall, Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and Ordination Hall. The main hall, the Vihan Temple, is the core building. Its foundation is about 1 meter high, and the hall itself is about 7 meters high. Ten guardian deities are sculpted above the ten entrance halls, and the exterior walls are inlaid with reliefs of the twelve zodiac animals. The General Buddhist Temple is the highest-ranking Theravada Buddhist temple in Xishuangbanna, a royal temple sponsored by the Dai royal family, and an important link in Southeast Asian Buddhist culture. The temple houses ancient palm-leaf scriptures inscribed with Dai Buddhist wisdom. During Dai festivals such as the Water Splashing Festival and the Closing of the Door Festival, one can witness the solemn scene of devotees offering alms to Buddha. The General Buddhist Temple is free to enter, open from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. A very friendly Buddhist temple.
