The most cost-effective guide to visiting Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang is here!||
||. One of China's four major grottoes, the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, is located in the southern suburbs of Luoyang, Henan Province, China. It is situated on the cliffs of Longmen Mountain and Xiangshan Mountain on both sides of the Yi River. The grottoes here were mainly excavated over a period of more than 400 years from the Northern Wei to the Northern Song dynasties. To this day, there are still more than 2,100 niches (or wall niches) with over 100,000 Buddha statues and more than 3,600 inscriptions. Most of these are located on the west bank of the Yi River. The excavation of the Longmen Grottoes spanned multiple dynasties, beginning in the Northern Wei period under Emperor Xiaowen, flourishing in the Tang Dynasty, and concluding at the end of the Qing Dynasty. Currently, there are 2,345 existing niches and over 110,000 statues.
✅ About tickets 🎫: Day tickets and night tour tickets (both are 90 per person)
⚠️ PS: Recently, in summer, it is recommended to buy tickets for around 5 PM, so you can see both the daytime and nighttime illuminated scenery. Especially for those who come specifically to check in, you will definitely see more and not miss out!
⚠️ Differences between day and night tours:
❤️ During the day, you can see: Xishan Grottoes, Xiangshan Temple, Bai Garden (Bai Juyi's cemetery)
‼️ At night, you can see: Xishan Grottoes and Xiangji Temple, but you can see the illuminated effect of the grottoes from the opposite Lifo Terrace, which is truly stunning!
✅ Tour route: Northwest Service Area (this is the closest) → Enter the scenic area → Xishan Grottoes (this is where everyone takes photos and checks in online) → Cross the submerged bridge (note that the scenic area is a one-way tour, once you exit, you can't re-enter) → Lifo Terrace (wait for the lights to turn on, around 7:20 PM) → Take the electric car back to the Northwest Service Area (it's about 700 meters to the entrance)
⚠️ Notes: The Xishan area is where everyone will definitely stay the longest because many people want to take photos. Specifically, there are Binyang Cave, Wanfo Cave, Lianhua Cave, and Fengxian Temple. When taking photos, be sure to find multiple angles. Use a wide-angle lens for full-body shots, or use a value of around 3 for half-body shots near the railing!
❤️ The lights turn on around 7:20 PM. Wait a little longer until it's completely dark for a better viewing experience.
✅ Travel tips:
Shoes: Make sure they are comfortable, preferably sports shoes, as there is quite a bit of walking!
Clothes: Black, white, and red all look good in photos, or if you have time, you can dress up for the occasion.
Transportation: There are direct buses (10 yuan per person) from Luoyi Ancient City, White Horse Temple, Yingtian Gate, and Luoyang Longmen High-Speed Railway Station. After watching the lights at Lifo Terrace at night, be sure to buy electric car tickets quickly, as there are many people and you will need to queue. Around 8 PM, there are also buses (5 yuan per person) from the Northwest Service Area to downtown attractions.
❤️ No matter where you travel, always pay attention to safety! Go out happily and return home safely!
After the night tour was cancelled, the night view was not as good as the pictures on the Internet (the Buddha was not illuminated). We checked in at around 16:00 and cleared the area at 18:00... (after dark, some small lights will light up if you walk straight)... 1.5h~2h (if you bring your baby and need to hold or carry him/her the whole time... and then take a break to eat something, it will be a bit rushed to walk straight... and tiring, so the experience is just average... I just took a quick look and didn't understand any in-depth explanations of the stories behind them) If you visit all of them and listen carefully to the explanations, it is probably about the same to check in at around 13:00 [If you go to the White Horse Temple in the morning, there is a bus that goes directly to the Longmen Grottoes after visiting the White Horse Temple ... It saves time and effort! ! ! ! 】 【⭐There are many makeup shops around the White Horse Temple. There is no need to go to the makeup shops near Yingtianmen or Luoyi Ancient City in advance... You can just go there and do it directly】【⭐There is also a makeup shop in the Grand Canal Museum. If you want to take pictures of past and present lives, it is more convenient to do makeup inside】
I really recommend that you go to the caves with a guide. You can learn a lot of stories and history. You can't see much by simply looking at the contents. After all, the caves have been weathered by nature and stolen before, and they are not very clear. Opening hours: 8:00-16:30, stop checking tickets: 17:00; the weather has been a bit cold these two days, so friends who come a few days later should wear thicker clothes; recommended time: 3-4 hours, you have to walk most of the time, so it's better to wear comfortable shoes
Check in at 16:00 and enter the park. The time is quite tight... In addition, if you wear a Warring States robe or other Hanfu that drags on the ground... It is inconvenient to move... If you rush to the viewing platform to take pictures of the Buddha statue around 17:20-17:30 when it is half dark, it may be okay... When we went there, it was completely dark, so it was not possible (The night tour will be cancelled from November 1st... The night view is not so beautiful) (Clear the venue at 18:00... In general, the 1.5 h-2 h is quite rushed. I didn’t listen to the explanation or look carefully. Basically, I just took a quick look, took a few photos, walked to the bench next to it and took a rest... Bringing children to carry them throughout the whole process... The experience is not very good) ⭐The best time is to enter the park at 15:30 The first section of the journey is basically over when you walk to the most famous check-in Buddha (it takes about 1-1.5 hours). It is not dark from 16:30 to 17:00 ⭐Then cross the bridge🌉Go to the opposite side of the Buddha and wait for it to be half dark to take pictures📸 (The semi-dark state lasts about 20 minutes) I didn’t take satisfactory photos and I rushed in on the last bus. I took a quick look and felt that the cost performance was average (especially with a baby, holding the baby is twice as tiring) It would be much better if the adults walked around leisurely and took photos without the children for 3-4 hours.
Located in Luoyang City, Henan Province, Longmen Grottoes is the world's largest stone art treasure house with the most statues and the largest scale. It is UNESCO named the "highest peak of Chinese stone art" and ranks first among China's major grottoes. It is a world cultural heritage. Legend has it that Longmen was opened by Daqizhishui and Yishui on the top of the dragon gate, and Yuyuelongmen also happened here. Now the east bank of Yishui (Yihe) is specifically called "Xiangshan" after Wuze Tianjian Xiangshan Temple, and Xishan continues to be called "Longmen Mountain". "Both sides of the mountain are broken, relative to the door, but the dragon can be more, so the dragon door." Also known as Yili, here the east and west two mountains face off, Yihe water through the stream, far away like a natural doorway, so ancient called "Ili." Its grottoes were chiselled in the Northern Wei Dynasty, Sheng in Tang Dynasty, and finally at the end of Qing Dynasty. After more than 10 dynasties, it has been built for more than 1,400 years, and is one of the longest-built grottoes in the world. The existing cave statues are 2,345, more than 110,000 statues, and they were painted in a large number of paintings, mostly faded today. The statues are mostly built by the royal nobles and are the only royal caves in the world. Mainly in accordance with the image of Wu Zetian, the Lushena Buddha, the Xiaowen Emperor for the Queen Feng chise Guyang Cave, the Lanling Wang Sun Yu Wanfo Cave statue, Li Tai for the Changsun Queen to create Binyang South Cave, Wei Guifei chise Jingshan Temple, Gaolishi for Tang Xuanzong to create the infinite life Buddha, etc. I also experienced the caves of foreigners such as Tianzhu, Silla, Tuhuolu, Kangguo, and found that there are European patterns and ancient Greek pillars, which can be called the highest international level of grottoes in the world. Longmen Grottoes have shown the trend of Chinese grotto art, which is a "milestone" of Chinese grotto art, which not only has an important impact on the opening of other grottoes in China (such as the Great Buddha of the Temple of Heaven in Hong Kong), but even as far as East Asia, North Korea, South Korea, Japan and other countries, such as Nara Dongda Temple, Japan. South Korea's grottoes and so on are affected by it. Raiders traffic: Located between the city and the high-speed rail station, close to Guanlin, bus can reach. Accommodation: There are snacks nearby, not far from the city of accommodation. Price: 90 yuan, the province's military preferential treatment certificate is free. Attractions: Xishan Grottoes, Dongshan Grottoes, Xiangshan Temple and Baiyuan (Baiju Yi Recluse and its cemetery). Day tours and night tours are available. Equipment: Xishan Grottoes are empty and treeless. In summer, you need to bring sunglasses, sun hats, umbrellas, mineral water. Dongshan Mountains are beautiful.
Taking advantage of the relatively few people before May Day, the first stop to bring family to Henan for tourism, is not a loss for the world cultural heritage, the first of the four grottoes, the superb skills of the grotto carving is too great, standing in front of the Buddha statue can not help but feel the wisdom of the ancients. The grottoes are mainly concentrated on the west bank of the river. The route is based on the route of going north to south on the west bank ☞ crossing the river ☞ south to north on the east bank. Before coming, I recommend the northwest parking lot on the Internet. It is close to the entrance of the scenic spot. It is indeed a lot closer to walking, but if you want to take a battery car to return to the parking lot when you return to the east bank, I can only sit in the Northeast parking lot, but it is farther away from the Northwest parking lot. People who can't walk want to take the shortest road back to the Northwest parking lot. Either walk or take a boat 40/person (the battery car in the Northwest parking lot is out of service). I really don't know if this is a diversion measure for the scenic spot. When shopping, it is best to explain or rent a guide, 30 yuan / table, deposit 200 / table, not to go around the flower.
20240416 PM: 1. Longmen Grottoes is a world cultural heritage site on both sides of the Yi River in Luoyang. It was first excavated in the 17th year of Taihe in the Northern Wei Dynasty (493 AD) when Emperor Xiaowen moved the capital to Luoyang. After more than 500 years of continuous excavation, a magnificent grotto belt stretching 1 km in shape like dragon scales was formed. There are 2,345 existing caves, more than 2,800 inscriptions, more than 70 pagodas, and more than 110,000 statues (30% from the Northern Wei Dynasty and 60% from the Tang Dynasty). It is the largest and most numerous stone statue group in the world, and the first of the three major grottoes in my country and the only royal grotto. The scenic area consists of five areas: Dongshan Grottoes, Xishan Grottoes, East Bank Observation Deck, Xiangshan Temple, and Bai Juyi Cemetery. It is a good place for sightseeing photography, humanities learning, ancient costume photography, night scene photography, worshiping Buddha, and fitness and health preservation. In history, there are many celebrities such as Emperor Taizong of Tang, Wu Zetian, Emperor Qianlong of Qing, Bai Juyi, Zhou Enlai, Chiang Kai-shek, Soong Mei-ling, Zhang Xueliang, and Mei Lanfang. ①Address: No. 13, Longmen Middle Street, Luolong District, Luoyang City, Henan Province ②Transportation: Direct bus access, easy parking by car ③Peak season: None ④Duration: 5 hours ⑤Ticket price: 90 yuan 2. Xishan Grottoes are located in Longmen Mountain on the west bank of the Yi River. The lights are turned on at 19:00. From north to south, there are (there are countless small grottoes without introduction signs, and they are not introduced one by one due to space limitations): ①Ticket gate: Behind the 3 cave house door is the Lantern Avenue, which has a beautiful night view. ②Flood Bridge: A three-arch stone highway bridge, where tourists walk under the bridge ③Yuwang Pond: Two streams on the wall flow into the semicircular pond, where koi swim. The pond is named after the story of "Yu chiseling the Dragon Gate". There is a two-story stone house with a locked door on the pond ④ Chen Tuan Stele: This was written by Chen Tuan, a famous hermit in the early Song Dynasty, when he lived in seclusion on Huashan (5A). After being stolen, it was passed around for several times. During the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty (1862-1875), Chen Zhaoyong from Luoyang obtained a copy and asked the monk Zhishui to carve it on the cliff wall of Longmen ⑤ Qianxi Temple: It was carved during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty (649-683), and the main Buddha Amitabha is 7.8 meters high ⑥ Binyang North Cave/Middle Cave/South Cave of the Northern Wei Dynasty: It was carved in the first year of Jingming (500 From 523 to 523, the merit caves were dug by Emperor Xuanwu for his parents, plus one dug by Liu Teng, the Zhongyin of Yongping, for Emperor Xuanwu, a total of three caves, with 802,366 workers. Due to the civil strife in the palace, only the middle cave was completed (the main Buddha is the Three Buddhas, and there were three groups of large reliefs on the front wall of the cave, of which "Emperor Xiaowen Worshiping Buddha" and "Empress Worshiping Buddha" were stolen in the 1930s and are now stored in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, USA). The main bodies of the South Cave and the North Cave were completed in the Tang Dynasty. The main Buddha in the South Cave is 8.6 meters high and is equipped with more than 350 small niches; the main Buddha in the latter is the famous "scissor-handed" Amitabha. These three caves are the only existing royal grottoes in my country that clearly record the reasons, processes, and labor of their excavation. ⑦Yique Buddha Shrine Stele: The original Northern Wei stele, 2.88 meters high and 1.9 meters wide, was erected by Li Tai, the fourth son of Emperor Taizong of Tang, for his mother, Empress Zhangsun. At the same time, Binyang South Cave was excavated. The inscription was written by Prime Minister/essayist Cen Wenben and handwritten by Chu Suiliang, one of the four great calligraphers of the early Tang Dynasty... The word count exceeds the limit, continue in the last picture
Seeing the Buddha is very shocking. There are many Buddha heads and hands missing. I heard the commentator say that the great powers robbed and looted, but it was a pity.
The Longmen Grottoes are quite shocking. The grottoes have been drilled for more than 400 years before and after, and they are quite shocking from the east bank. The day and night scenes are recommended. The stone statues without heads or damaged stone statues in the grottoes are more like a patriotic education, which makes people feel distressed. After reading the travel book of the west, the child traveled, and was very interested in various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
