The monument is designed to be suspended up and down and enclosed in four squares. The inner floor of the monument is only a piece of black marble, on which is engraved with Kennedy's name. The designer of the monument, Philip Johnson, was very successful in conveying his homage to the president: "a place of quietrefuge,anenclosedplaceofthoughtandcontemplationseparatedfromthecityaround,butneartheskyandearth."
