Looking for a real escape from the desert heat? Let me introduce you to Abha specifically the breathtaking Abha High City.

On my recent trip, this mountaintop gem completely changed my perspective of Saudi Arabia. Instead of sand and scorching temperatures, I found cool breezes, green mountain peaks, and clouds drifting so low it felt like I could reach out and touch them.

The High City sits along King Abdulaziz Road in As Sarawat, and the moment you arrive, you’re greeted with panoramic terraces overlooking endless layers of mountains. The air is crisp, the vibe is peaceful, and everything slows down. Families stroll along the pathways, friends gather at open-air cafés, and photographers wait patiently for that perfect golden-hour shot.

And trust me sunset here is not something you rush. Arrive in the late afternoon and stay. The sky shifts from bright blue to warm gold, then melts into deep purples as the city lights begin to sparkle below. As night falls, the mist rolls in and the temperature drops quickly (yes, even in summer bring a jacket!).

Getting there is easy by taxi or rideshare, and the scenic drive up is part of the experience. Once you’re there, grab some Arabic coffee and fresh pastries from one of the terrace cafés and just sit with the view. It’s simple, peaceful, and honestly unforgettable.

Abha is cooler and wetter than most Saudi cities, so expect the weather to shift quickly from sunshine to foggy magic. The local currency is SAR, and cards are widely accepted.

If you’re craving mountain air, tranquility, and views above the clouds, Abha’s High City absolutely deserves a spot on your travel list.

Unfortunately, despite its beautiful scenery and the opportunity to sit and relax, the castle was closed and deserted. This castle should have been telling the story of the nation's great history.
