Tajikistan 🇹🇯 Tajikistan is truly a country for mountain, lake, and road trip enthusiasts. However, for your first trip, I don't recommend cramming the Pamir Highway into it. The Pamir route requires at least 9-12 days, and as of 2026, you'll still need to be cautious about the area near the Afghan border.
If you only have 7 days, it's more scenic and practical to travel this way: Dushanbe → Iskanderkul → Seven Lakes → Panjakent.
📅 7-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Dushanbe 🇹🇯
Take a break from your flight. Visit Rudaki Avenue, Independence Square, Navruz Palace, and Mehrgon Market. A light first day exploring the city.
Day 2 — Dushanbe → Iskanderkul 🏔️
Drive up the Fann Mountains to Lake Iskanderkul. Stay at a guesthouse/homestay near the lake for one night. The Fann Mountains are relatively easy to access from Dushanbe compared to the Pamir Mountains and are a major hiking area in the country.
Day 3 — Iskanderkul → Panjakent
Visit the lakes in the morning and continue on to Panjakent. Use this town as a base for the Seven Lakes, which the official tourism website also recommends as the starting point for exploring the Fann Mountains.
Day 4 — Seven Lakes 💙
Road trip to Haft Kul / Seven Lakes. The seven lakes are arranged along the Shing Valley at an altitude of approximately 1,600–2,400 meters. The color of the water in each lake varies depending on the light and minerals.
A 4x4 vehicle with a local driver is recommended for this day. And if you really love the mountain atmosphere, staying in a homestay near the lake for one night would be more worthwhile than driving back to the city.
Day 5 — Seven Lakes → Panjakent
Take a short walk or hike in the morning and return to Panjakent in the afternoon. No need to try to drive back to Dushanbe in one day.
Day 6 — Panjakent → Dushanbe 🚙
Travel back to Dushanbe. Use this day as a road trip + extra time because the mountain roads may take longer than planned.
Day 7 — Dushanbe + Return Trip ✈️
Explore the city, buy souvenirs, and travel back.
🏨 Recommended Accommodation
For comfortable accommodation in Dushanbe, choose Dushanbe Serena Hotel. Its location is quite convenient for exploring the city.
For a more budget-friendly option suitable for backpackers/road trips, consider Green House Hostel.
For Iskanderkul and Seven Lakes, I would choose local guesthouses or homestays over large hotels. Because it reduces driving time and offers a more scenic mountain view.
🍴 Restaurants + Food
In Dushanbe, try Olim Qurutob if you want to try authentic Tajik cuisine.
Another option is Toqi Teahouse for local food and a Central Asian atmosphere.
Recommended dishes include Qurutob, Plov/Osh, Shurbo, Mantu, Sambusa, and Shashlik.
☀️ Best Time to Visit
For this route, June–September is the easiest because the mountain roads and hiking trails are in better condition than in winter.
Spring carries risks such as avalanches, landslides, and road damage. Many mountain roads are only fully open during the summer.
🛂 Visa for Thai Citizens
This is very easy — currently, Thai passport holders can enter Tajikistan without a visa for up to 30 days, according to the Tajikistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
However, if you are entering the GBAO/Pamir region, you need to check for a GBAO Permit separately, and officials may check permits along the route in those areas.
⚠️ What about the Pamir Highway?
The Pamir Mountains are a major highlight of the country, but I didn't include them in this 7-day plan.
If you really want to do the Pamir Highway, you should extend it to around 10-12 days, use a 4x4 vehicle with a driver, and carefully check the situation near the Afghan border. As of August 2026, there were still cross-border fire incidents in Darvoz and the GBAO (Greater Bay Area), which can cause travel restrictions to change rapidly.
And avoid venturing off the beaten paths near the border, as there is still a risk of minefields in some areas.
✨ In summary:
7 days is a good amount of time for a first trip.
Dushanbe → Iskanderkul → Panjakent → Seven Lakes → Dushanbe
If you really enjoyed this trip, you can always come back for a second 10-12 day Pamir Highway adventure; it will be more fun and you won't need to drive 8-10 hours a day just to say you've seen everything. 🇹🇯
