Gjirokastër: Local Rules to Respect Albania's Stone City 🏛️🇦🇱

#LocalRules

Gjirokastër, often called the "City of Stone," is one of Albania's most remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its beautifully preserved Ottoman houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and historic castle create a unique atmosphere that deserves every visitor's respect. Following a few simple local rules helps protect this living piece of history.

Many of the traditional houses are still private homes, so avoid entering courtyards or taking close-up photos of residents without permission. Walk carefully on the cobblestone streets, as they can be slippery, and stay on marked paths when exploring Gjirokastër Castle. Never climb on ancient walls or remove stones or other historic objects from the site.

When visiting museums, churches, or cultural landmarks, keep your voice low and follow any photography guidelines. Support the local community by buying handmade crafts from local artisans or dining at family-run restaurants. Most importantly, leave no litter behind so future visitors can enjoy the city just as you did.

Respecting these local rules made my visit more meaningful and allowed me to appreciate Gjirokastër not only as a beautiful destination but also as a place where history and everyday life exist together.

What local rule do you always make sure to follow when visiting a historic city?
