Umm Qais – ancient ruins with one of the best views in Jordan

Umm Qais is one of those places where history and landscape come together perfectly. Ancient ruins, quiet atmosphere and a breathtaking view over three countries at once – Jordan, Israel and Syria. Compared to Jerash, this place feels much calmer and more authentic, with very few tourists.

The city was known in Roman times as Gadara, part of the Decapolis, and today you can still walk among basalt ruins, theaters and colonnaded streets while looking over the Sea of Galilee.

🚗 How to get there

Umm Qais is located in northern Jordan, close to the Syrian border.

– From Amman – about 2 hours by car
– From Jerash – around 45 minutes
– Taxi or rental car are the easiest options
– Public transport exists but is slow and inconvenient

Tip: best visited as part of a northern Jordan road trip.

🎟 Entry fee

– 3 JOD
– Free with Jordan Pass

🏛 What to see

– Western Theater made of black basalt
– Colonnaded street
– Basilica terrace
– Old Ottoman village houses
– Panoramic viewpoints over the Sea of Galilee
– Museum area inside restored buildings

You can explore everything in about 1–1.5 hours.

🕒 Best time to visit

– Late afternoon for the views and light
– Sunset is especially beautiful
– Avoid midday heat in summer

⚠️ Tips

– Bring water, there are limited shops
– Wear good walking shoes (uneven basalt stones)
– Wind can be strong on the plateau
– Don’t rush – this place is about atmosphere

🔗 What to combine it with

Umm Qais is perfect to combine with:
– Jerash
– Ajloun Castle
– northern Jordan countryside drive

Together they make a great full-day or relaxed overnight trip from Amman.
