Since I have the summer off, I decided to check Russia off my bucket list this August. I spent about nine days split between Moscow and St. Petersburg, and honestly, most of my memories (and budget) revolve around the food.
We started in Moscow. Red Square and the Kremlin were cool to see, but the real surprise for me was the Moscow Metro. It feels more like an underground museum than a subway station! For lunch, I found this tiny spot serving the most comforting borscht and savory blini (Russian pancakes) with sour cream—I think I ate my weight in those. We also did a quick day trip to Sergiev Posad, which was beautiful, though a bit crowded.
Then we took the train to St. Petersburg. The Winter Palace and the Amber Room at Catherine Palace were stunning, but after hours of walking, my feet were killing me (definitely pack your best walking shoes). To escape the crowds, we spent a quiet afternoon walking around Elagin Island, which was incredibly peaceful.
August weather was mostly nice, but it got surprisingly chilly in the evenings, so I was glad I packed a light jacket. Overall, it was a busy trip and I'm exhausted, but getting to try so many local pastries and hearty stews made the sore feet totally worth it.
