🏡 Review of a World Heritage Village in the Mountains

Japan still has "truly rural" spots that are so beautiful they feel like you've stepped back in time, and two places you shouldn't miss are Ainokura (Gokayama) and Shirakawa-go, famous for their unique "Gassho-zukuri" thatched-roof houses.

⸻

🌾 Ainokura Village (Gokayama)

A small, quiet, peaceful, and very local village.

Ainokura is one of the World Heritage villages that has best preserved its traditional way of life. It's not crowded, allowing you to experience a truly authentic Japanese atmosphere.

✨ Highlights

· Hundreds of years old Gassho-zukuri houses
· Surrounded by mountain views Gives a warm and natural feel.
· Quiet and peaceful, perfect for a slow stroll.

📸 Overall feeling:
Very peaceful, like time slows down. Perfect for those who love slow life and want to escape the hustle and bustle.

⸻

❄️ Shirakawa-go

A world-famous World Heritage village.

Shirakawa-go is more famous and larger than Ainokura, especially the aerial view of the entire village covered in snow – an iconic image of Japan in winter.

✨ Highlights:

· Ogimachi viewpoint (panoramic view)
· Numerous Gassho-zukuri houses
· Lively atmosphere with restaurants and souvenir shops

📸 Overall feeling:
Lots of tourists, but still stunningly beautiful. Perfect for landmark photography enthusiasts.

🚗 Transportation

🚃 From Takayama

To Shirakawa-go

· Take the Nohi Bus (approximately 50 minutes).
· Runs throughout the day, very convenient.

To Ainokura (Gokayama)

· Take a bus from Takayama → Ogimachi (Shirakawa-go).
· Transfer to another bus to Ainokura (approximately 20-30 minutes).

⸻

🚄 From Kanazawa

· Take a direct bus to Shirakawa-go (approximately 1-1.5 hours).
· Then continue to Ainokura.

⸻

🚙 Driving

· The most convenient option if you want to visit two villages in one day.
· The scenery along the way is beautiful.

⸻

🕒 Best Time to Visit

· ❄️ Jan – Feb: Snow cover (peak season, very romantic)
· 🌸 Apr: Cherry blossoms + traditional houses
· 🌿 May – October: Lush green, beautiful nature
· 🍁 November: Autumn leaves

⸻

💛 Summary

· Ainokura = Peaceful, local, nature
· Shirakawa-go = Landmark, spectacular, everything included
