Sansha is a small city located on Yongxing Island in the Xisha archipelago in the South China Sea. Administratively part of China’s Hainan Province, the town has a small non-commercial airport and a small harbor. Sansha’s population varies between one and two thousand. Most civilians are engaged in fishing-related activities. In addition, there are a number of government employees and military personnel staying there for all or parts of the year. Tourism to Sansha does exist and many who visit are attracted by its warm waters, tropical environment, and beautiful scenery.
