St. Nicholas Church is the most beautiful Baroque church in Prague. It stands on the Lesser Town Square. Its magnificent dome, towering bell tower, and complex interior decoration are all called the model of Baroque. Historical background At the beginning of the 18th century, the church was built on the original site of the Gothic church of the same name. The famous Baroque architect Kryštof Dientzenhofer was responsible for the design of the building, which completed the facade and atrium of the church. After his death, his son Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer completed the altar and the stunning dome, and then his son-in-law Anselmo Lurago added the bell tower. It took three generations and more than a century to complete. The appearance of the gorgeous Baroque church is very eye-catching. The towering bell tower, white building with bronze roof, is undoubtedly a landmark on the left bank of the Vltava River. Walking into the church, you can see the complex and gorgeous interior decoration, the elegant main altar, and the lifelike frescoes, which are very Baroque and magnificent. At the same time, the indoor wonderful light effect, the dome with a diameter of 20 meters and a height of 49 meters, is amazing. Among the many works of art in the church, the "Holy Trinity" above the altar painted by Francis Xavier Palek and the statues of the four priests sculpted by Ignaz Platzer. Music performance The organ in the church has a good sound. Mozart played the organ in the church when he lived in Prague. The church currently has concerts at 6pm every night except Thursdays from late March to early November, many of which are Mozart.
