Since Bamberg was elected bishop and royal land by Henry II in 1007, the city has been known as the center of the new bishop and the "second Rome". The cathedral contains the statue of the knight of Bamberg and the tomb of Pope Clemence II, the only papal cemetery in Germany where Emperor Henry II and his wife were buried.
