Eski Monastery is an ancient grotto monastery about 10 kilometers east of the city of Nides, discovered in 1963. Early Christians were pagans in Turkey and could only hide from persecution. The towering main church contains beautiful Byzantine murals from the 1st century AD, and the Madonna in the back hall is a long-built Mary with a Mona Lisa-style smile. It is said that this is the only image of the Madonna that is smiling.
