This is the site of Sri Lanka's independence ceremony on February 4, 1948, to commemorate Sri Lanka's independence from British colonial rule. The memorial hall is surrounded by no walls, airy and bright, suitable for the tropical climate of South Asia.

The Independence Memorial Hall in the center of the square was built to mimic the hall where the royal family received pilgrims during the Kandy Dynasty, and it is easy to take deep photos in the memorial hall. Surrounded by 60 stone lions symbolizing the Sinhalese, each is said to represent a king, with a statue of Sri Lanka's founding prime minister on the back.

The Independence Memorial is in the center of Independence Square. In front of it is a statue of the founding Prime Minister, Sennayak.
