大阪市道路起点路標江戸時代、高麗橋左岸側にあった里程元標が廃止され、道路元標としてこの場所に改められました。道路標識に掲げられている距離表示は、各地の道路元標を基準にして、その距離を求めています。道路元標は、街づくりの基点にもなる大切なものなので、その場所が変わったという事は、その時をもって都市計画が大転換したという証拠でもあります。ちなみに、現在、道路元標がおかれている場所は、江戸時代までは大坂の街外れに当たりました。少し南側の堂島は、江戸時代に市街地として開拓され、繁華街になったばかりの場所になります。明治期以降の大阪の街が拡大していく始まりの場所に、大阪市の道路元標は置かれていると、言えると思います。
