Built by Philip II in commemoration of the victory over the French at the Battle of St. Quentin in 1557. The Royal Palace/Monastery/Pantheon took over twenty years to build and was finished in 1584. Philip II died here, and he along with most of the Hapsburgs are buried in El Escorial's Pantheon.

Totally worth it. Took me around 2 hours to get through the entire site. No photos allowed inside. Favorite part was the magnificent basilica found inside El Escorial.

Escoria Monastery is a world cultural heritage in Madrid. It is a huge monastery with royal style. In fact, it is also the Royal Mausoleum of Spain. There are many famous Spanish kings buried in it. However, the monastery is far away from the city. If time permits, I suggest you look at it. There are still a lot of Royal collections, very precious. Expensive.

The eighth wonder of the world, the monotonous stone symphony, the nightmare of architectural art history. Set of monasteries, palaces, mausoleums. Built in 1584, only an hour's drive from Madrid.

Philip II, an emperor whose father did not like him, eventually created brilliance. His suburban palace and monastery were integrated into one building, showing that his decision to support Catholicism also led to a period of architectural style.
