Switzerland is still the only country to date, despite plans to build more national parks to similar levels. The Swiss National Park was established on August 1, 1914 (National Day of Switzerland), and expanded in 1959, with an area of 174.2 km2, making it the largest protected area in Switzerland and the earliest national park in Europe. It is a nature reserve, completely free from human influence and aggression, and the unexploited natural scenery is intact. The park is home to about 650 plants, 30 mammals and more than 100 birds.
