Yongning Gate was originally the "an to the door" to the east of the Chang'an Emperor City in the Sui and Tang Dynasty. It was retained when the Han built and rebuilt the new city in the end of Tang Dynasty. Ming Hongwu was expanded from seven to eleven years (1374 to 1378), and the gate was used as the south gate.
