Came here for lunch with a co-worker. We almost drove past it if GPS didn't tell us where it was. The storefront can easily be missed. The dishes at Mandarin Root were great. Their dishes are fresh, flavorful and portion appropriate for the price. The restaurant is clean and service is very good. They have various tables to accommodate different party sizes. They have a bar as well. You will likely have better luck parking on the street. The driveway (left of the restaurant) to parking lot is a narrow one-lane, to the back of the building. I think there are about 8 - 10 parking spots - def not sized for the # of seats in the restaurant.

    5/5Outstanding

We were visiting my parents and I'm so tired of the Chinese restaurant they go to that I asked my nephew to find another one. Love this place. There were 6 of us--my sister and nephew eat safe dishes but each said that the rendition of their dishes (Mongolian Beef and Beef Chow Fun) were the best they've had. The Scallion Pancake is outrageously delicious. Wish I'd taken pictures because it is different than any scallion pancake I've ever had. Puffy, flakey reminding me of Indian puris. The 2nd time I came I wanted a whole order for myself. My husband and I love noodle dishes so asked for a recommendation. The excellent waiter recommended Roots Specialty noodles which was unlike other noodles dishes I've had. The shrimp were huge, the sauce was yummy. We came back 2 days later with some friends and split several tapas and a noodle dish. This time we got garlic noodles and they were just ok, nothing special. However, the Pork Belly Quesadilla, Fried Tofu and Chicken Lettuce Wraps were superb, and I hate tofu. Got one dessert--molten chocolate lava cake--delicious. I can't wait to go back and am thrilled there is an excellent restaurant near my parents' home when I come to visit.

    4/5Excellent

I was very surprised by how good it was, we were 9 at the table and had the opportunities to taste a few entrees and cocktails. The food has deep Chinese roots but with a modern twist. The cocktails were delicious, I really enjoyed my Oaxaca Old fashion. Among the entrees they have eggplants to die for, and other favorites were the pork belly quesadillas, the tangerine beef, the lotus and lillies, .... The young server was very nice, efficient and knowledgeable. It will probably become soon one of Palo Alto hot spots.

    4/5Excellent

The Peking Duck was perfect: delicious succulent meat, no fat, and crispy skin. The only thing they need to do differently is serve slightly more plum sauce and slivered scallions. The pea shoots were very good but could use slightly less oil in the preparation. The eggplant in garlic chili sauce as also very tasty but would benefit w less oil in its preparation. The lettuce wrapped chicken was good. The tofu is very good but again less is more, when it comes to the oil in their sauces. My main complaint is the dark interior. Although they seem to want to make it like a "club", the guests are the usual Silicon Valley couples and families. They go for the food not the dark ambiance. It actually makes it hard to read the menu.
