The view of Boston Park is good, the island needs to be passed by boat, and many interesting areas can be used for barbecue and picnic.
All the islands have their charm, but Spectacle Island is my favorite. Only a 20 minute boat ride away, it's truly a spectacle for any sea glass enthusiast.
Great islands and a nice ferry to take you around. Not cheap, but fun on a nice day.
I'm a sucker for two things when traveling: Ferry boats and national parks. I can trace both of these loves back to my Seattle days, but the love affair endures. Boston Harbor Islands National Park lives up to my very high expectations of both. A quick ferry from downtown Boston transports your to plenty of green space, historic battlefields, and if you time your trip right, some fantastic bird watching. Hey, sometimes you just need to get away.
The Boston Harbor Islands are so cool! For only $12 you can take a ferry from Long Wharf to George's Island where you can visit the 19th century Fort Warren or Spectacle Island where there is an amazing park that was created with dirt from the Big Dig. There is also a beach and a cool "Green" visitors center on Spectacle with amazing views of Boston! Once at Georges or Spectacle, there are inter-island ferries that take you to Grape, Bumpkin, Peddocks, and Lovells Islands. The National Park Service offers tours to Little Brewster Island and Boston Light, the oldest light station in the United State. Little Brewster island is the birthplace of the United States Coast Guard. There is so much to see that it's impossible to explore them all in one day!
