文字通り決死の行の拠点

世界遺産「紀伊山地の信仰」の構成資産で、小さな屋形船に入って外から封じ海の向こうにあるという浄土に向かうという修行？(補陀洛渡海)に送り出したお寺です。平安時代以降数十名の修行僧がどうなったかの記録は一切無く、余りにも壮絶な信仰が古代はともかく江戸時代までなされていたことには驚きしかありません。
