Ikeda Moments: Through Travelers' Eyes

Ikeda Winery (Ikeda-cho Grape and Wine Research Institute), Hokkaido, is known as the "Wine City" due to its resemblance to a European castle and is a pioneer in wine production by Japanese municipalities. Established in 1963, the winery successfully cultivated the cold-resistant grape variety "Yamasachi" and produced high-acidity, dry wines, taking advantage of the Tokachi region's cold climate. Visitors can tour the underground aging room free of charge, sample wines, and enjoy Tokachi cuisine and panoramic views at the fourth-floor restaurant, making it a famous tourist and industrial landmark.

1. Historical Background: A "Wine City" Born from Adversity
The birth of Ikeda Winery stemmed from a crisis. The 1952 earthquake off the coast of Tokachi and two consecutive years of cold weather severely damaged agriculture in Ikeda Town. To revitalize the economy, then-mayor Kin'ichi Marutani, drawing on European experience in winemaking from wild grapes, decided to launch a "wine business," attempting to transform natural resources into an industry.

In 1963, Ikeda Town obtained a permit for experimental production of fruit wines, officially establishing the "Ikeda-cho Grape and Wine Research Institute." This is also Japan's first winery operated by a local government (township government). This castle-like building, perched on a mountain, symbolizes local development and hope.

2. Featured Grape Varieties and "Tokachi Wine"
Ikeda Winery focuses on cultivating hardy grape varieties that can thrive in Hokkaido's cold climate.

"Yamako": This is the winery's most representative variety, a hybrid of mountain grapes, exhibiting a strong wild flavor, high acidity, and rich taste.

"Kiyomai": Also a high-quality variety adapted to the local environment, with a balanced flavor.

"Tokachi Wine" Characteristics: Due to the high acidity of grapes from the cold region, the winery's wines are mostly characterized by bright acidity and a dry palate, making them ideal for pairing with meat dishes.

3. Wine Castle (Winery) Highlights
This building is not only a winery but also a comprehensive tourist center, which underwent a complete renovation in 2020.

Basement Aging Room (B2): Stepping inside, the air is filled with the rich aroma of wine. Hundreds of oak barrels lie dormant, while the walls display vintage wines from different years, telling the story of this distillery's history.

Brandy Distillery (1F): Through huge glass windows, visitors can see the brandy stills and the barrel aging process. The distillery has been using the Cognac method to produce brandy since 1964.

Shopping Store (1F): Here you can buy a wide variety of Tokachi wines, sparkling wines, brandies, and related grape-based products.

Restaurant & Observation Deck (4F): The restaurant offers dishes made with local Tokachi ingredients, paired with delicious wines. From the restaurant or the rooftop terrace, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the vast Tokachi Plain, the Ribetsu River, and the Hidaka Mountains.

The moment I set foot on the pristine land of Hokkaido, I felt a profound sense of relaxation. This trip had specifically included a visit to a renowned Hokkaido winery nestled amidst lush green hills, creating a picturesque setting. The winery exuded a rich European ambiance, the air intoxicated by the aroma of grapes and the scent of oak barrels. I took a guided tour to learn about the winemaking process and sampled the local white wine, which was refreshing and lingering, making it one of the most unforgettable experiences of the trip. Sitting on the winery's terrace, gazing at the vast vineyards while sipping a glass, I felt a profound sense of peace. This trip to Hokkaido not only allowed me to slow down my pace but also allowed me to rediscover the beauty of life and the exquisiteness of taste.
