Cloisonné is a beautiful pottery crafted by fusing glaze onto a base of copper or silver. Its vibrant colors have been compared to the seven gemstones, and it is also known as cloisonné. It is said to have originated in British Egypt and was introduced to Japan at the end of the Kofun period. Owari cloisonné was created by the feudal lord of the Owari domain, Kaji Tsuneyoshi, in the latter half of the Edo period. It became a significant export product from the Meiji era onward, sparking a surge in technological innovation. While traditional cloisonné involved applying glaze to recessed holes in an "inlay" technique, it evolved into techniques that can be considered the height of modern cloisonné, such as "wired cloisonné," which incorporates glaze into thin wire strips of metal, such as silver or gold, and "unwired cloisonné," which creates gradation effects using glaze without the use of wires. While the techniques of Owari cloisonné spread widely, nurturing imperial artists, some artisans, despite their advanced techniques, remained relatively unknown. The exquisite beauty created by precise planting lines amazes the world, intertwined with extraordinary techniques and colors like supernatural works. Please take a look, focusing on the new series from the Meiji era to the pre-war period.
